Momoko was by no means an authority on war or medicine, but she was determined to help Karla's people as much as possible. And while she was limited in other areas, between her years as a hero, her time at Fandom High, and her time at the Police Academy, she did have quite a lot of first aid training!
So
it was that a few days after her talk with Jono, Momoko was now faced with giving her first lesson to a small hand-picked group of the volunteer Landens that hadn't quite made Jono's cut. She introduced herself (as best she could) and her place in Karla's court, the army, and in the war. And then she began her first lecture on battlefield first aid.
"There are three most important things to remember about getting hurt when fighting. First! You're probably still in the middle of the fight. This means that there are going to be people attacking you, people fighting around you, people falling right next to you. You can't take a break just because you or someone next to you got hurt." Which totally sucked, but it was true. Even for Hero work.
She paced a bit, hoping she was remembering everything she'd been taught herself, and trying to not show she wasn't completely sure of herself. "Second? There's probably not going to be a healer right there to help you. Even if there's a healer in the camp, you'll have to learn to think like maybe they can't get to you or maybe there's someone hurt worse than you. Because that may actually be what happens. We don't care what your job is, or who you are, or whether you're Blood or Landen; if someone is hurt worse, that's the priority. You have to be ready to take care of your own wounds or to help the person next to you. No matter who you or they are."
"And third, you're still in the middle of a fight. I know that's the same as the first thing, but it's totally a third thing as well. We're at war. War is totally like a living thing or a part of nature. It doesn't stop or start when we want it to. That may seem weird to hear, but thinking of it like that, like..." She frowned slightly. A thousand years of peace... how to explain war to someone who never knew it? "Like it's a harvest that goes on even when you've broken your plow or cut your hand, you can understand it better. You have to get done what needs to be done."
"In war, if you can keep fighting when you're injured, you have to. If someone is helping you, they may need to stop and fight. If you're helping bandage someone else, you may have to stop. If you can't fight, stay still and try to keep safe; if you can move, try to get to a safe place away from the enemy and as close to camp as you can get and stay there."
She hesitated a moment to look at the faces and see if they were even listening to her. Wow. They were! "Right. Any questions so far?" She hoped there weren't too many - she was totally eager to get to the actual hands-on training part and evaluating who she had in her group. The best of them... well, a medic corp assigned to a healer was totally wishful thinking, but Momoko could dream!
But at the least, more people with a basic idea of battlefield first aid meant fewer people who wouldn't be coming back and even fewer people Raven and Karla and the other healers would drain themselves trying to heal.
She smiled slightly. This? This was one part of the war that Momoko could feel... heroic about.
[For the poor people who have to put up with listening to Momo talk, and anyone who is in Karla's world.]
