It's the day before Valentine's Day. To Clark, however, it's just another day. In fact, chances are it hasn't even occurred to him that it's nearing on any sort of special occasion. As far as he's concerned, he and Anna are just meeting Chloe and Jimmy for a cup of coffee and small talk at the Talon. Nothing special ( Read more... )

Clark nods back in acknowledgment and then closes his eyes as a familiar voice sounds from behind him.

"Hey, guys," Lois makes a face at all the decorations, not entirely dissimilar to the one Clark was giving them earlier. "Is it really wrong that I want these chubby cherubs to burst into flames?"

Clark, sensing an ally for once, drags a chair over and scoots his own to the side to make room for her. "Welcome to the love fest."

Lois sits and gives him a bright, fake smile. "Yeah, and me without my uzi."

Lois gets a raised eyebrow from the Anna corner and not much else; she's too busy drinking her coffee.

Mmm, coffee.

"At least I have good reason to be bitter, Smallville," Lois points out. "Shouldn't you be overjoyed to actually be in a relationship to celebrate for once?"

"You know, Lois, I think that might even be a record for you to overstay your welcome this quickly."

Lois beams.

Chloe sighs and sets her mug down. "All right, you two, time out. Take the gloves off."

"She started it," Clark mutters.

"Oui, cheri, but that does not mean that you have to finish it." Anna smirks over her coffee.

"Aw, isn't that cute. She has little French names for you and everything," Lois mock coos.

Clark just shakes his head and gives Anna a pained look. "See? If I don't finish it, it will never end."

To Lois, firmly: "Tais-toi."

Clark gets a pat on the hand. "Ignore her. She is being pointlessly abrasive."

Lois raises an eyebrow at Anna. It's not that she understands what was said, but there's no mistaking that tone of voice. "And she even fights your battles for you. I always knew you were hopeless on your own, Smallville."

"Lois, knock it off," Chloe says, just as sharply as Anna spoke to her.

"Oh, right. I forgot. I'm sitting at the Clark Kent appreciation table," Lois rolls her eyes.

"Feel free to leave anytime," Clark finally snaps.

"I fight everyone's battles for them," says Anna cheerfully. "You might call it my vocation."

"Actually, I'd be more apt to call it sticking your nose in where it doesn't belong," Lois replies, just as cheerfully, giving Clark a grin. "Smallville here needs all the help he can get standing on his own two feet. Guess that's still just my job around here."

"Well, at the moment, I'm sitting, and I'm doing just fine."

Lois pats his shoulder pityingly. "You keep telling yourself that."

"Oh, but sticking my nose in where it doesn't belong is no end of fun."

Perturbed? Anna? Not in the slightest! She was almost starting to miss talking to people who blatantly dislike her.

"For you maybe. Not for everyone around you."

Clark leans over to Anna. "Trust her on this. She'd know."

He gets a whap on the arm for that. "Please. You all know things started getting a lot more exciting around here when I arrived."

Chloe laughs. "She's got us there, Clark."

Anna just shrugs and sips her coffee.

Sorry, Lois. She's in too good of a mood to feel like arguing the point further.

Pre-Valentine's Day cheer, perhaps?

Well, Lois will just consider this victory. "So, what do you two little lovebirds have planned for the big day?"

Clark eyes her. "Do you really care?"

"Not especially. I'd just like to know if I should be avoiding the farm or not, cause you know, there are some things I'd really rather not barge in on."

Wishing she could make a joke about how they tend to prefer her apartment for that sort of thing, but not actually daring to do so, Anna shrugs again. Watching Lois and Clark bicker is actually mildly entertaining.

Clark sighs. "Barge in all you want. I don't recall anything ever stopping you before."

"Oh, don't start with me, Smallville. You're the one who just wanders into our apartment whenever you feel like it. It's almost like catching me in the shower the first time wasn't enough for you."

"Lois..."

"And hey, I guess I can grant you that once was fair, what with your naked-in-a-cornfield escapade I had to put up with."

Clark will just take this opportunity to quietly facepalm.

"...Okay, I seem to have missed this," Anna says questioningly.
