thunderstorms and BMVD aesthetics

Woke up early this morning to wind and thunder and rain sheeting down. Closed some windows to keep out the worst of the wet, then went back to bed and lay there watching the trees tossing and rain pouring off the eaves of the house. I love thunderstorms. I love thunderstorms. I missed them horribly the year I lived in Seattle. Never again will I live somewhere that has climate rather than weather.

I completely with you on this. I have been in Seattle for five years and everyone looks at me like I'm frickin' Frankenstein when I wax nostalgic about dramatic weather. I spent the first 27 years of my life in the Midwest, and we know from storms, dangit. Winter storms are even sorta good, but there's nothing like a summer thunderstorm to make me feel alive. I miss waking up in the middle of the night to the pounding rain, muttering "shit shit shit shit" as I stumble around the house closing the open windows, watching lightning flash in the dark. It's all "home" to me.

On the upside, we at least have earthquakes here. We had one a couple of years ago that was as cool as any summer storm. The problem is, they're pretty rare. Mt. Rainier could explode someday, so that would be cool too.

I think what disappointed me most about Seattle was that I'd been told "it rains all the time," which was fine with me, and then when I got there I discovered that no, it doesn't, at least not if by "rain" one means "precipitation that is affected by gravity." The weather is frequently damp, but seldom rainy.

I was also slightly bitter about having been told about the tremendous beauty of Mt Rainier and then discovering that "the mountain is out" is actually a rather rare meterological phenomenon.

Thank goodness I'm back in the midwest where I belong.
