It's the last week for ramps, so I got lots. Also probably the last week for morels, which I can't afford to get lots of, but I did get a few; not sure yet what I'll do with them-it seems so decadent to be getting morels just for me rather than for a dinner party. Perhaps I'll have to have truepenny and the Minister of Hardware up for dinner ( Read more... )

I did indeed, and for what it's worth, wanting to reread the Earthsea books was pretty much exactly my reaction too. *g*

I wouldn't have said so, myself; I think they're both drawing on the well-established mythic tradition wherein names have power. It's an important element of lots of fairy tales, just for starters. I think it's a common element across multiple cultures, too, although I don't know as much about that as I ought to.

I just got back from the farmer's market, myself. laurashapiro May 24 2003, 13:03:58 UTC
I don't know what ramps are, though. You'll have to enlighten me.

The last week for asparagus! Waaaaah! ): So I got a bunch to go with the feast P. and I are making for Memorial Day dinner: ribs flown in from Montgomery Inn in Cincinnati, mashed yukon golds, steamed asparagus with butter, and fresh organic peach pie with vanilla ice cream. I can hardly wait.

Also got the first tomatoes of the year, large-ish early girls I think they are plus one big red and yellow stripey wobbly one, and lemon thai basil, which is going to be sauce for our spring vegetables-in-herb-pasta ravioli tonight.

::happy::

I saw LeGuin read from "Always Coming Home" many years ago, and have never forgotten it.

Ramps are wild leeks; they have slender white bulbs and wide flat leaves, and are distinctly garlicky. I adore them -- in salads, in frittatas and risottos, on pizza, substituted for leeks or scallions...

What a pity it's your last week for asparagus! We'll have it for another three at least. The white asparagus just arrived this week, and some purple; more purple next week, I expect.

Your menus sound marvelous, by the way -- both the feast and the pasta. Yukon golds are my favorite all-purpose potato; they do mash beautifully, don't they?
