You guys. I have a problem.

Mar 25, 2008 22:52

Okay. Look. I already have two vids with clips in the timeline, and as of last week I've ripped all of BtVS and Gilmore Girls to my new vidding drive so that I can start a VividCon vid for each of those shows. I got smacked upside the head by a Friday Night Lights vidsong a few weeks ago; I keep waiting for my brain to realize that the song isn't ( Read more... )

What I do when this happens to me laurashapiro March 26 2008, 13:30:38 UTC
1) Make a list of all the vids I want to make.

2) Realistically evaluate which ones really need to get done for con deadlines, etc.

3) Put the remaining vids in priority order so that I know when I'm going to make them.

4) Write down any and all ideas/notes related to any of the vids that are trying to take over my brain at the moment.

5) Listen, obsessively, to the songs I need to be vidding right now until I get back to feeling taken over by *them* and not the shiny new ideas.

Hope this helps! (:

Yeah, those are all standard operating procedure around here. And usually they work fine! And I wish they were working now! Unfortunately, no. Taking notes, in particular, has not been doing its usual job of pacifying the part of the brain that wants to work on that vid RIGHT NOW. Hence the problem. *g*

Well, damn. I wish I had other suggestions.

The only thing I can think of that would dissuade me is to start clipping for one of the projects that's got you by the brainstem. Because clipping takes forever and is tiresome and I tend to hit a low point where I lose enthusiasm for the vid before I've even started editing.

But then, you use AVIsynth, so perhaps you don't go through the same tedious process.

Well, clipping actually isn't all that tedious now. Ripping DVDs is a bit tedious, I guess, but I can actually do it while doing other stuff at the computer. Clipping is just a matter of opening up Premiere and hunting for bits to drag into bins; it's all virtual clipping.

Part of the problem, I think, is that the next step for most of these vids is rewatching the shows involved, and we've hit that point in the semester where spending all day in front of the TV sounds like a GREAT idea. *g*

Once again: we are the same vidder. (I have a "To Be Vidded" folder with lyrics printed out, too. Hee.) I keep doing what Laura suggests, with the writing down of the vids and selecting them based on con deadlines and whatnot, but the problem is that I can't decide which one I want to be my Premiere vid. If any. So I just kind of flail and look at the Sweet Charity vid I still owe and feel bad. (Vidding is FUN, dammit.)

My sister! Seriously, WHY IS THIS OUR HOBBY?

The Premieres vid is pretty well settled, actually, and I am hopeful that that commitment will eventually be enough to calm me down and get me on (one! single! manageable!) track. One of my colleagues pointed out this morning that I'm probably having this problem because we just finished spring break and I don't want to go back to work. Which... um. She's not wrong. *g*

So, I know I should be trying to offer helpful advice and stuff, as well as sympathizing with this tragic hardship, but I'm mostly sitting here bouncing and grinning because OMG YAY H.L. VIDS. I am a very simple person.

*hugs* I hope the vid police clear the pile-up from the brain highway soon.

*BOUNCE BOUNCE BOUNCE*

And also, *more hugs* :-)

All will be well, darling! Go wherever the vid flow takes you. Trust your gut. *more hugs*

I don't know if you're really looking for a solution to a creative dump! LOL

I have six wav files on a timeline at the moment. Six projects because I feel that each one will work. Eventually, one will work its way to the surface, and then another, and then another.

Having enough room to rip *entire series* at a time is the most awesome thing EVER! Right now, I have all of SPN, all of Dexter, all of Angel and seven movies ripped and scripted. They're not going anywhere. :) \o/

Sing it, sister! I have a second 500GB hard drive to install this weekend, and then I will be able to have EVEN MORE STUFF at my disposal.

At this point I don't know that I'm looking for a solution as much as an explanation (why is my perfectly reasonable system that usually works so well NOT WORKING?), and, as I said to SDW upthread, I think I was diagnosed pretty well by a coworker earlier today, who observed that we just finished spring break and I don't want to go back to work but I'll feel guilty if I'm "doing nothing", so my brain is attempting to manufacture reasons to do other stuff. Heh. It's all kind of a moot point until this weekend, anyway, which is the next time I'll be able to devote a solid few hours in a row to anything vid-related; we'll see if my head has sorted itself out by then.

Okay now I'm having a problem deciding what vid to support. I'm going with Gilmore Girls because there are so few good vids for it and I'm dying to see it. But a Wire vid! That would be amazing. And Friday Night Lights! Ignore that. Gilmore Girls and Buffy vids, YAY! Just remember that when you're done, you're free to do any vid you like and multitask to your heart's content.

I definitely think talking about your other ideas with other people could help. For the vid ideas that won't leave you alone, maybe you can only vid a tiny bit of it, the part that won't leave you alone so then you can see how awesome it will be and move on to the vids you need to get done now. I know for me personally if a vid stays in my head it can get elevated to Perfect status and vidding it a little helps me keep it grounded and less mustvidrightnow.

I support this sabbatical.

::focuses on Gilmore Girls::

Your idea about knocking some of these ideas down from Perfect status is a good one! Most of them, though, are just in the planning stages; I would have to rewatch the show to do anything serious. They're just sort of... taking up headspace. (But it's nice to know that there will be an audience for FNL and Wire vids!)

And wow, I LONG for that sabbatical.
