Computer games

So my brother and I were talking about classic video games earlier (and lamenting that every damn PC game seems to be the same now a days) in the week, mostly PC games (I suspect this is sort of the function of 'things were better in OUR day than you kids with your new fangled games. I remember when they only went bleep!) and a couple came up with ( Read more... )

Man, I loved Archon 2. My little brother and I would play it endlessly on the Commodore 64. Of course, I think our version was bugged so we could never actually finish a game, but we knew who won anyway!

Me too! The remake of Archon itself seems pretty good, actually, though I had to stop playing before I got too far. It's not quite as good as them remaking #2 but it's still better than never playing it again ;-)

You just had me reading the Wikipedia articles on both Archon 1 and 2. *grin* Now that I see there's an iPhone game, I may have to go download it for my iTouch!

The Crescent Hawk's inception was a brilliant game, I'd love to see a remake, my copy had an error on it so I could never finish the came, I was crushed.

I remember loving the game but I'm not sure if I ever actually finished it. My follow through on games was a bit less dedicated than I am now as a kid!

There hasn't been a remake of Sam & Max as far as I know, just sequels and sequels and sequels. Day of the Tentacle is Tim Schafer's baby and he's busy doing Psychonauts and Brütal Legend and whatever the company's new four mystery projects are.

I'm not really interested in remakes of anything, I just want new stuff. Although I wouldn't object to every Tactical RPG ever being ported to the PC, since we haven't had one since, oh, forever, and they're roughly my favourite genre.

I do want to see a five-year moratorium on FPSes though. The genre is played out. There is not even a damp patch left where the horse used to be. Go do something that's not a waste of time with all those resources.

Oh.. and a sequel to Psychonauts, please.

I actually should have said remade or continued, honestly, because that's what we meant when we were talking about Day of the Tentacle/Gabriel Knight and such.

What I'd actually like from companies is for them to stop trying to make everything have a MMO rpg feel. I don't PLAY MMOs precisely because I don't like that sort of game so making even all the single player games feel like I should turn a corner to someone shouting "Noob!" and bashing rabbits to death doesn't make me inclined to play longer.

The problem with most current games is that they're more and more relying on 'brain hacks.'

They're not just 'wasting' the time you're playing them, it's worse, they're wasting the time you're Not playing them.
I'm looking at you Farmville.

Google 'Cow Clicker.'

I finally burned out on the facebook games, I got really tired of feeling obligated to play.

Hmm! Well, a lot of classic games I can think of offhand I like just the way they are; I'm not sure which ones would really benefit from an update and facelift. Although a 3D update to The Guardian Legend might be interesting; the NES game starred an android woman who could spin around and turn into a spaceship, and the gameplay alternated between a vertical scrolling shooter and a top-down action adventure, both of which could translate well into modern genres.

Actually, I wouldn't mind seeing some new Quest for Glory titles, or similar takes on the adventure/RPG mashup concept. Though that might be mostly nostalgia talking.

Well, for pc games it's often impossible to PLAY classic games without jumping through a hell of a lot of hoops, you see.

True enough. I've tried to go back and revisit old Sierra adventure games now and then, and while I've succeeded in getting them to run most of the time, I've had a couple of cases where a certain segment was impossible because I had to beat a timer that was based on the PC's clock speed or something.
