Internet Woes

Aug 23, 2006 16:34

I am very, very, very angry with Earthlink right now. We didn't have Internet access for a day and a half - not because the service was down on their end, but because (apparently) something in our modem got corrupted and needed to be reset (in a way I'd never had to do before, or I'd have just done it myself), and it took phone calls with FOUR tech ( Read more... )

I've had great luck w. both Comcast and Cox high speed cable. I flat out refuse to have DSL.

Why no DSL? I've been pretty happy with it. I suppose we could do high speed cable, though - we don't have cable television (satellite instead), but I think the house does have cable-y type stuff installed from the previous owners. I'll look into Comcast. Thanks! :)

Locally, all DSL is on Qwest, and I'm doing everything in my power to not give them money. That and, for me, cable was just easier and more reliable from the get go. Used to be DSL took some techie know-how to set up - cable was plug and play. DSL you need an ISP *and* a carrier, and line filter and splitters, and...with cable, they're one and the same. Plus, with Cox, I got a wicked bundle deal on phone, internet, and digital cable. Comcast doesn't offer phone in my area yet, but I still get the bundle deal w. the digital cable. I'm not a satellite girl :)
The bf swears by DSL (despite sharing my reservations against Qwest), and doesn't want cable internet. Go fig!

Heh - I actually called Qwest yesterday, only to discover that they don't offer service in California. So, I'm safe from their EVIL! :D

We don't have cable out here on the Island so I have no idea if cable is better than DSL or not.

I have had DSL with my local phone company for several years now and I have been so pleased with them. Very very good service, great price, rarely any issues and lots of perks.

So if you want DSL my thought would be to inquire with your local phone company.

Hee - actually, that was my first thought, too. And I called my phone company, and spent 45 minutes on hold in various places, and NEVER got to talk to a person who could answer my questions (or presumably take my order for new Internet service). This didn't particularly inspire confidence in me that I'd be happy with their customer service in the future. I will probably still check and see what sort of a deal they could give me, though. *headdesks*

Yeah, I had a really grumpy day on the telephone today, didn't I? :D

I'm still on dialup. I have no idea why I felt the need to impart this information to you.

Pro of SBC: The service almost never goes down.

Con: When it does, forget getting useful help. We got caught between the phone side of the company and the DSL side, which is like being a rabbit who built a warren in the middle of a nice quiet field in Gettysburg. (Telling them, "You are ONE COMPANY. YOU figure it out and get back to me when you've found the problem!" was predictably useless.) Maybe if your problem is clearly with DSL and you don't have a history of phone-line trouble they can point to they are fine.

Well, I sort of went with SBC - I decided to switch to Sonic.net (which I'd never heard of, until pussreboots mentioned it below) - and you do have to have SBC service to qualify. But I'm thinking that you have Yahoo through SBC/AT&T? I would have signed up with them yesterday - in fact I TRIED to sign up with them. But after sitting on hold for about an hour and a half, what with one thing and another, I decided that this was NOT the way I wanted to start a new ISP relationship. :D There was some weirdness about their records showing that I already have their DSL service (although I wasn't being billed for it, and I'd certainly never signed up for it). So, poo on them. :D

Hopefully this sonic.net will be good! *crosses fingers*

Urgh, yes. If they keep you waiting that long when you want to become a new customer, forget it.

Good luck with sonic.net!

What's your e-mail address/account name over there? I went to their website, and thought it all looked good, so I went ahead and made the switch. (YAY!) Afterwards, I noticed a place for referrals - so, I'll contact them and see if they'll let me give your name as a referral, so you'll get a free month of service. :)
