You should challenge the reassessment. There is always a way to do that. You can show what you actually paid, which is prima facie proof that the value of the property is not as high as they've set it.
Most areas don't really "assess," they just tack on a percentage every time real estate comes up for re-evaluation. Right now, that's totally wrong-headed and won't hold up if challenged.
I can't, not for this year's taxes. Those appeals were due on may 1st and I didn't buy the house until may 5th. I can appeal for 2010, but for the next two quarters our taxes are gonna be a lot higher than they should be.
