Job Hunt

Aug 01, 2006 16:26

Having graduated and passed the big test, I'm looking for a job right now. I know that looking for a job (and not having a job) is something that everyone goes through, and thus I am in good company when I say that I find the process rather soul-sucking. Aside from what I expect is the usual hassle and trepidation with the process, I am annoyed ( Read more... )

And yes, I am looking outside the local area. The missus and I don't want to move, but we could for the right $$$. It's just that all the ones with the right $$$ want several years' experience. Bah.

My brother had similar things going on...

Want me to ask him and my dad how to get around that?

I really have to agree with all of this. The "3 years experience" really IS a deterrent - and besides, you do have some experience, from your internship. If a potential employer knows that you're fresh out of law school, they're going to look at the work you did while in school, recommendations from professors or people you've done internships with (if you don't have one, get one!). Companies/firms are always looking for grads. Really.

The hardest part is writing a really fabulous resume (and presumably there's a career services at the U of I that can help you) to get your foot in the door. As soon as you're called in for an interview, you'll be fine - I can't imagine that you won't impress whomever is interviewing you.

I've gotta second what other people said....at this stage, don't skip applying for the "experience" jobs. You HAVE some experience....maybe not three years, but you're not a bonehead either! Chris didn't have enough experience to technically apply for the job that he currently has. But he went out on a limb and did anyways, and now his job rocks socks. Don't sell yourself short!!

As to the matter of pride vs. bills...in my opinion, it's a time factor. For me, I'm working to apply to all the jobs I really want right now. Then I'll do another round of jobs I'd be ok with. If I don't get anything there, I'll expand to jobs that are somewhat in my field. And if it's 4 months from now and my Mastercard bill wants to eat me, then I'm just gonna have to find a job...period.

As an aside, since this is my first bout of "professional" job hunting, I feel a lot of trepidation. It's kinda scary, but exciting, but scary...do you get that too?

I just can't believe the "adult" world runs on a "system" like this.
