Daily Mail: Religion divides us more than race, say Britons

Religion is something you can choose. Even the most brainwashed, indoctrinated or abused child can be freed from it, given competent care. Whereas I couldn't become un-white even if I wanted to. Re: the headline - maybe if people are very obviously one religion or other, but other than that.. I don't see it. I honestly couldn't tell you what religion most of my casual contacts are.

I suppose animal sacrifice has some "power" because the people who do it are upset by it (or at any rate, don't like the loss of a perfectly useful animal) but I'm sure they're also more desensitised to it than you and I might be. If it was something they didn't have any qualms about doing, it wouldn't be a sacrifice.

For instance, human sacrifice is considered to be the absolute tip-top biggest sacrifice you can give, presumably because it's what feels like destroying the biggest thing of value.

I think that's an overly optimistic view of animal sacrifice. I don't suppose a shechita or, um, Islamic equivalent is bothered, and the voodoo priestess interviewed in the clip mentions she was bothered at first but it's necessary For Science Carrying Messages to the Spirit World, so what can you do.

I'm dubious about human sacrifice too. For cultures where it was widespread and accepted, I'd imagine it would have been just like cooking a really nice Sunday roast, or something else you do on special occasions. Humans can think of the most disgusting things as nostalgic and domestic.

Haha the Green Day comment. :D

But yeah I agree. Nothing angers me more than the widely-held believe that humans have souls and animals don't. We're all animals.

This × 1000.
