Dr Who, three sentences

Mar 12, 2013 23:55

So... the Ninth Doctor is gone, and I'm very sorry about that, because I liked him very much, and I liked that run of episodes generally (though I thought the last one was OTT)  -- I thought the Empty Child was chilling and thrilling, and the best of the season. This new Doctor, the Tenth Doctor, I don't like much at all, but I guess I'm stuck with ( Read more... )

I loved Nine and it took me a long time to get used to Ten (and Eleven when his time came). The Empty Child was my favorite episode from that season because of several reasons: WW2, Captain Jack, and the very eerie child with the gas mask.

I think you'll grow to like Ten (I certainly did) but it did take me a couple of episodes to get used to him... probably by the time "School Reunion" aired (episode 3) because Tony Head was it and the following episode, "The Girl in the Fireplace".

Thank you for the encouragement; Ten seems just very full of himself so far.
And in terms of general reactions... well...one more episode down. It was cat-nun-nurses and had the second female villain to die more or less in Great Spiritual Revelation in about a week. Hhhmmmm...
Comparing this to what happens to sympathetic and supportive female characters (Harriet Jones, - career destroyed, Lynda-with-a-Y - killed) it seems it's better for women to be evil around Dr Who. He'll look after you if you're evil.

I hated Ten with great vengeance until 2x03. Then I loved him. Nine will always be "my" Doctor, but I do love Ten.

Well, after the cat-nun-nurses I'm still disliking him intensely.
I thought that was a very weak episode, and not in anyway believable, medically. (If a quick swash with disinfecting vaccines would cure all human diseases in one hit, well, I'd say the research program would have been wound up years ago). And as I've just said to Autumnia, above, I am looking pretty cynically at the treatment of non-companion women characters and Great Spiritual Revelation.
(Did you know Christopher Eccleston starred in a TV movie about the Second Coming?)

New Earth is a pretty weak episode, yes, what with the science fail. Tooth and Claw is a little stronger (and some good women), but it does take a while for the season to hit its stride.

The problem of women is one that plagues Nu!Who on and off regardless of season and Doctor, and there's been a great deal of pixels spilled over the matter. There are some fantastic supporting female characters, but there is also a tendency to kill off the women more often than the men.

Coming back to this point, late, because I've just seen the school episode (was that Anthony Hopkins? brilliant!) and there was the wonderful and remarkable Sarah Jane Smith (I do vaguely remember her from before!! and I definitely remember K-9. Not too sure about which doctor it was -- the one with the long scarf?). So... there was the wonderful and remarkable Sarah Jane Smith, and not-quite-as-wonderful Rose Tyler and what did the scriptwriters think would be a great way for them to interact??

Well, you know better than I do. :( All I'll say is that I thought that aspect of this episode was pretty blinking weak. On the positive side, I liked the signal that we'll see more of Sarah Jane, and the Headmaster -- the way he squatted down like a bat! -- and the very scary bats themselves. Oh, and there was Torchwood! more to come, I know.:)
