It came to me last night just as I was dropping off. Damn you, muse! It's Rodney's. I'm not sure what sparked it, but I assume John just corrected a mistake in Rodney's math or something. It goes like this:
I'm delighted! There's this song ('Academia' by Sia) I listened to today that goes like crazy with your plot bunny and it goes like this:
"I’m a binary code that you cracked long ago But to you I’m just a novel that you wish you’d never wrote I’m greater than x and lesser than y, so why is it that I still can’t catch your eye? You’re a cryptic crossword, a song I’ve never heard While I sit here drawing circles I’m afraid of being hurt"
Strangely enough, the danger of losing the other one on a mission seems to be a trope less used for angst than one would think. But maybe that's because the sga fandom is so dedicated to crack and delivers in shiploads. ;)
and gets his jokes and gets *him* Don't you just hate it when the PTB put him in a room/plane/geek facility together with someone who think he's just fine as long as he's not himself? AAArghH

Rodney I always think of as being bisexual/flexible and just not bringing it up because why bother? For all his talk he doesn't usually say that much, and given his clearance it's fair to say he's better at keeping a secret than one would assume, and he probably did a cost-benefit analysis and decided it wasn't worth it (because he doesn't think that John wants him, of course. If he figured he had a chance it'd be a different story.) That's what I usually think, anyway, but this plotbunny demanded straight(ish)!Rodney. I agree that he's playing it safe with women, though, because we all know John's the one he really wants

Here's what I think: I don't think that Rodney thinks that John doesn't want him, because there are these moments. When they sit on John's bed (some of the candle's are lit), tinkering with their toy cars, John complains that Rodney created an extra setting that makes the cars really fast but also rather broken afterward and Rodney yells at him for painting his car with colors (but they secretly think that it's kinda cool to have a fast miniature car even if it breaks/that it's really a little bit pretty) and then they both reach for some tool or other and their hands touch and *bang* they look into each other's eyes and half a minute later they realize they still do. Then they start fussing about AND THEY NEVER TALK ABOUT IT.
I think what it would take for them to just do it would be a long heated conversation where Rodney yells the whole time how they really shouldn't because there so

I would read the hell out of that fic, just so you know.
They both really, really suck at that whole relationships thing, so I could see them being completely oblivious and pining for aaaages, but I could also see them deliberately ignoring it out of fear, because they do have so much to fear. Maybe a mix of both, or one after the other.

It immediately became my new favorite McShep song! You can listen to it here in the upper right corner.
