That's pretty much the biggest deterrent for getting a hedgehog in an illegal state :( I don't know if a vet would treat a hedgehog in the state of California because I don't know what possible repercussions there might be for that vet.
I wouldn't do it, for just that reason. A friend had a fox in a state where it was illegal, and when he broke a leg, she had a really hard time finding a vet willing to treat him.
Double check if it's illegal to own a hedgehog or if it's just illegal to buy one there. If it's illegal to own, I just wouldn't do it or I'd see if there was a licence you could get to own one. California is awful about pet ownership. Last I heard, they still banned ferrets! D:
I noticed a photo of a hedgie at that link! Obviously they don't have problems treating them. That clinic is near me, too. :-)
My only concern is how to get one into the state. I have wanted a pet Ёжик (pronounced Yohzhik, i.e. hedgehog) since I first learned the word in my Freshman high school Russian class waaayyy back in 1972! I have been collecting yohzhik figurines for almost 40 years now!
You won't we buying one at a Pet Smart. I live in Oregon and at a Pet Smart, I waited 15 minutes to ask if they had hedehogs when the sales clerk asked me, "A real hedgehog?"
"Yeah, a real hedgehog. This is a pet store isn't it?"
Anyway, they didn't have them there. Save you a trip.

I don't think you'll have to worry about being reported there!
