It really annoys me that people gets pets without doing any research *grr* I am glad that you have taken him in, it sounds like you are doing the right thing with regards to socializing him. The next step I would try is picking him up without the gloves. I did that with mine, mine was abused (poked, yelled at) so he was nasty when I got him. Eventually I could pick him up with my bare hands and cuddle with him. He never totally lost the attitude but he came a long way. Good luck :)
I think if you just handle him often, as long as he isn't showing signs of being seriously stressed (diarrhea, losing quills quicker, etc), he'll warm up. He just has to learn that being in your lap is where he's going to be spending a lot of time, and he'll get used to it.
What a cutie, too. We can't have hedgehogs in PA. ;.; I had one before it was illegal, but sweet Annie has since passed on. I wish we were allowed to keep them as pets, they're such wonderful animals, as you know. I hate my representatives.
