Fleece liners, open cages, and other queries

1. At the moment, Hildy lives in a 30 gallon aquarium, which is not really big enough for her (in my opinion.) I'm moving soon, and will have plenty of room. I have intended to create some sort of open cage on the floor since she seems to like the 'run' I bought, but I've heard hedgies are good climbers. (She's never tried to get out of the run. 1)One of my cages is made of cube shelving. I don't have any pics, but the idea came from cavy cages. But there's no coroplastic cage liner inside, instead I have a plastic paint sheet to keep messes off the floor, then a cage liner and then the wire cage with no real bottom. I've never had any hedgehogs escape. They really aren't great climbers compared with rodents and other small mammals. Although I've heard there are some hh's that love to escape. Mine never have really cared to ( ... )

Hedgies always pee and poo in wheels. I just sprayed mine down with a water hose everyday. It was fine and never smelled. Your hedgie will get fat if it doesn't get enough exercise.

1) my dad actually built my kids a 'run', it is about 3-4 ft wide and 6 ft long and the walls are pretty high, a foot maybe (well, the other one was shorter, only 1/2 a ft. because Spike was blind and wasn't going to climb where he could not be comfortable). The bottom was wood too but had industrial platic over it and then lined with newspaper. I'll see if I can find pics of it and show you. That is the only thing that my babies ever used/needed ( ... )

In addition to the Hamor Hollow Web site, we've also started up HedgehogWorld.com. We already have dozens of articles online contributed by major breeders around the US.

1) An Aquarium is not a proper enclosure. Hedgies love to climb, so it's always best to have a secure cage, and to keep an eye on them when they're in a run/play area/etc.
2) I use fleece liners with my hedgies, they just dig under them and kind of wrap themselves up. Sometimes they'll do a little bit of digging in their litter box.
3) Just keep trying new things. Try the freezedried/canned insects that are sold for reptiles. Cooked chicken and cottage cheese seem to be welcomed readily by most hedgies.
4) They will *always* poop/pee in the wheel, it's just something you have to deal with:-\
5) It is best to keep hedgies seperated, as they are solitary animals.
