I wasn't able to post an entry yesterday for some reason. It must have been a busy day here on LJ, with everyone sharing their 4th of July experiences... Anyway, I didn't do the meme I was supposed to do, so I have another one for today, which I got from thekaleidyscope . So, here are my five words, and if you want five of your own, ask and you shall receive ( Read more... )

That was an interesting read. :). How warm does it get there? As in, what are the typical high temperatures? It's lovely for it to be late and still light out. The opposite, with it getting dark before 5 pm...not so much.

That's interesting about the imposed TV tax! Have there been complaints about it?

I learned something new! I never would've guessed accordions were so popular in Finland.

Well, we call +77 degrees F a sweltering heat, and there have been days of above +80 degrees. I wouldn't mind just the heat, but humidity makes it really unbearable... Typically, summer temperatures are closer to 60-70 degrees, which feels much better.
There have been complaints about the imposed TV tax, but surprisingly subdued. We don't do a whole lot of loud protesting, although there's a lot of quiet grumbling.
I read somewhere that the accordion may be popular especially among those who have summer cottages by the sea, or on islands, because the sound carries well. I also think that it's a relatively simple instrument to learn the basics of, so that may contribute to its popularity.

Oh yeah, I imagine humidity makes it feel worse! Here it gets 90+ (I don't remember it ever being this hot), but it's a dry heat, so it's not *too* bad. 60-70 sound like marvelous summer temperatures. I bet those in Arizona (which can get over 120, I think) would be soooo jealous!

Heh, sounds like the opposite of here. People loooove protesting loudly. Well, when it comes to certain things, anyway.

That makes sense!

Ouch, I think I wouldn't enjoy Arizona one bit... Not in the summer, anyway.
I think many Finns have opinions about stuff, but they choose to be vocal online instead of actually protesting out in the open. It's probably an ingrained way of thinking that you don't want to stand out. In a country as small as ours, with a population of about 6 million people, whatever you do, you get noticed. There is some activism. e.g. we had a Gay Pride parade in Helsinki last weekend. I've never been, but people seemed to enjoy it.
