Why are you, you?

   It's one of those deep questions again, isn't it, "Why are you, you? Well, I am me, to the best of my knowledge, because I have the genes I have, because I grew up when and where I did, had all kinds of stuff happen to me, and thought about a lot of it. Good point about the hobbies, although also I sometimes think that what sort of talents your parents have can play a role in what comes easily to you, which can play into that as well. e.g. both my parents had graduate degrees in English and so creative writing has always come easily to me. Studying philosophy was pretty much of my own choosing, but I think having such a solid background in the humanities helped a lot...it was a lot easier for me to get a degree in philosophy than it would have been in, say, math or science. (Something my mother really struggled with and thus was little help with when I was growing up.)

That's certainly true. I'm musical and have a nice singing voice, I've been told, and it runs in the family, on both my parents' sides. I also have a talent for languages, which is inherited, though my parents have more passive language skills, since they don't need to use foreign languages.
