Mary climbed out of bed and walked into the living room dressed in her nightgown. Even though John was always a slightly earlier riser than her, his lack of presence in the bed was what always woke her up.

When she saw him, she could tell something was wrong. Pouring her own mug of coffee, she sat down beside her husband. Something seemed to be nagging at her in the back of her mind, but she was able to ignore it. "Lousy sleep?"

"Tossed and turned." John said as he slid his arm around Mary's shoulders to bring her closer. "Sorry, I didn't mean to wake you."

"I don't know." Mary leaned into him with a smile on her face. Her husband's warmth was always comforting.

"What's on your mind?"

John had debated only a moment before answering her. Mary deserved to know where his thoughts were swirling. "Just thinking about life as a father. Seeing Dean again brought up a lot of memories and thoughts." He turned his head and smiled sadly. "I'm going to put a lot on your shoulders this time around. I've screwed it up three times, you'll have to make sure I don't screw it up a fourth."
