"Need a hand?" Not that Margaret had any to spare with Sonny in her arms. "Need a baby?"

John had finished the book, and now he and Jonah were carrying on a nonsense conversation. Well, nonsense on Jonah's side, but John was replying as if Jonah were making a police report.
"I see, Sir. And could you describe the person who spilled your sippy cup?"

Juliet smiles at the noise then looks back at Margaret. "What do they do to 'help?'" She's imagining them bringing things over, 'holding' the baby.

"And which way did the perp run, sir?" Jonah motioned toward one side, and babbled.
"That way, at a high rate of speed. Got it. We'll do our best to apprehend them."

Taking a deep breath, she makes sure she's fully composed before thinking about heading back out. It's not that this close group of friends won't know she was upset anyway. It's that Jonah doesn't know.
