OTA: timed to Monday morning

Apr 26, 2010 00:33

The clock on Kimberly's bedside read six in the morning, several hours before she had to leave for work, but she had given up trying to go to sleep. It seemed that way nowadays, and those nights when she could sleep, she kept thinking about home, or on some nights she would dream about her days as a power ranger. Those nights, she tried to not ( Read more... )

As the manager of the Waffle Place and simply as a guy who just had a decent work ethic, Bill was the first to arrive in the mornings and the last to leave in the afternoon. The sound of the bell jingling over the front door signaled the entrance of the first customer of the day.. Coffee brewing, the griddle in full swing and the waffle irons ready for business, Bill walked out into the restaurant: the place worn down but kept squeaky clean down to the silverware.

Spotting the woman, he brought her a menu and a set of silverware rolled up in a paper napkin. "Mornin'," he began, setting the silverware and menu down on the table. "You want coffee while you look over the menu? We've got some real good fruit stuffed french toast this mornin' if you're interested."

Kim found herself smiling (or atleast she felt the corners of her mouth turn up): thinking back in her gymnastic years when even the words 'french toast' would've meant extra miles to run.

"Coffee would be great, thanks." She didn't like to think of herself as an addict, but working 14 hours shifts did call for caffiene. Who knew, it might get rid of the shakes. "I'd just like a moment to decide."

She wasn't sure if she could take something that sweet at the moment.

Didn't take a genius to realize the broad was watching her weight, then again it wasn't any of his business so he should just get the damn coffee and shut up about it.

"Sure, notta problem." He nodded to the menu. "Be right back." He took his time filling up a newly washed coffee cup, just had one kind at the Waffle Place: regular, none of that decaf crap.

Coming back a good five if not more minutes later, Bill set the cup down in front of her, the small bowl of mini creamers and sugar packets already on the table. "You figure somethin' out?" He asked good naturedly enough, at least for him.

She ran a hand through her hair when he left to get her a mug and looked at the menu. The way her shifts worked, she rarely had the chance to indulge in breakfast food beyond toast or cereal, and even now the choices were a bit overwhelming.

Kim blinked when he set the mug on the table, and she wrapped her hands around it, the smell keeping her in the present.

She took another look at the menu before reaching to give it to him. "Waffles topped with strawberries.." She paused. "and some sausage links."

Not getting a decent night's sleep was one thing, but she was going to enjoy a nice breakfast.

Rei had heard Kimberly leave. It wasn't the first time the other girl was up early and it was obvious something was on her mind. Usually, Rei wouldn't say anything. They all had issues to deal with while in the village - a probable reason for why they were here in the first place - but Kim's symptoms only seemed to be getting worse and Rei could hear Usagi telling her that she should help if she could.

She was slow to get up and dressed. Slow, but not lethargic about it. She gave Kim time to do whatever it was she wanted to do, and then Rei set out to find her roommate. Rei ended up in the Waffle Place.

Spotting Kim, Rei walked over to the booth. "Mind if I sit down?"

"Free village," She said, waving a hand toward the bench across from her.

They hadn't really spoken much, except for when she returned and they caught up on things. It just felt strange that now, she was ten years older and Rei was still in her teens, it made Kim feel like time was going in quick reverse and she was still trying to slow down to the present.

"Sorry if I woke you up."

"I sleep lightly." She slid into the seat opposite of Kim. It was true, she had always slept lightly. Her grandfather said all Hinos did.

"But I sleep." Unlike Kimberly.

A smile, or something like a smile, crossed her lips. "Guess I'm still not used to a steady sleep schedule." Even though it had been three months since her return.

She took hold of her coffee mug, the heat and smell grounding her.

"Six years of 12-14 hour shifts take their toll."
