Where do I go from here? (Open)

Dec 08, 2011 18:30

After the conversation with my father I am at such a loss that I know not what to do. I went to my rooms after and looked at the cabinet beside my bed. That folder was where it should be, where I keep it. I took it and put it under everything else. Olore, being the curious fellow he is, decided that since the cabinet was open he should investigate ( Read more... )

Spencer was headed home after work when he saw Faramir walking towards him, looking as though he was lost in thought. He glanced up and the men met eyes, so Spencer nodded in greeting to him.

It is Spencer Reid nodding at me--it takes a moment to acknowledge that--and so I smiled and return the nod.

"How are you faring, Spencer?" He seems quite comfortable.

"Generally fine. A bit cold."

Despite living in Virginia for so long, the cold still affected him, probably because he was so skinny. He wrapped his coat further around himself.

"You?"

"Sorry about the cold. This cloak is warmer than it looks and I don't get cold when I wear it--even in deepest winter." I do stand out, using a cloak and not a coat. "The Elves gave it to my brother* and he gave it to me, the first time the village turned us into children."

Well, the second time he wasn't turned.

"Did that affect you?" I ask. "It did me, though I think it worked out for the best. Father was... He stayed with me."

*Yes, it's that cloak. The pin isn't on it.

Spencer shook his head.

"No, I didn't change..."

He had wondered why that was. Perhaps the village didn't want him to have to relive his childhood again.

"Your father took care of you?"

Spencer had read the books. He knew Denethor's feelings about Faramir. It was something that had endeared him towards Faramir's character as a child. Spencer also had a father that he felt he had displeased. That was why he left, after all.

"He did, though it has happened to me twice before and I knew what to do. I could have cared for myself for a few days, even without Boromir or Richard here." I would have been fine. "I'm not sure if father was actually concerned or not."

I couldn't tell then and now...

"Something happened. I didn't know at the time but he changed. He wished to speak with me and he even admitted that he had made a mistake about something." I look at Spencer. "I'm so astonished by it all."

Spencer nodded.

"It seems curious. In the.. histories where your story is written, your father seemed..."

He tried to come up with a diplomatic way to say this.

"Preoccupied with Boromir."

I raise an eyebrow.

"It has been so ever since our mother died. I know father was different before, but after the only important thing was Gondor. As the heir, that meant Boromir." I mostly did not matter. "I never was jealous of Boromir for that, I just wished that father would see me too."

It seemed so small, but he did not notice.

"Now he has. I will never believe that this village is hell, or any version of it. I have been given too much for that."

I smile, mildly embarrassed.

"It seems like a strange thing for a man my age, I suppose."

At least Faramir's father had an "excuse" of sorts, not that it was a good one. Spencer's father had no other children. He just didn't want him.

"I've had many good things happen to me in this village. And a boy is never too old to want his father's attention and love."

"Boy? I am thirty-one years old and stopped being a boy when I was ordered to the rangers at sixteen." I was smiling but now I am serious. "Having to fight and kill effectively ends one's childhood."

Then I smile again, a little bit.

"Though I understand what you mean. If only Boromir would know about it. He always wished that father and I could get along better. Now we have the chance."

Spencer knew all too well about that, though he'd never been to war. So far he'd had to kill 2 people in the line of duty. He'd been left shaken after each.

"I'm glad for you."

"Thank you." I like Spencer. He has a solid feel about him.

"I lost a friend here. I was teaching her to read English and she was teaching me French in return. There's always a bit of a shock when someone leaves." It's not so bad, just a little... emptiness for a while. "And Meg was very amused that I was learning her language, too."

"I'm sorry.. I've lost friends here as well."

Two, in fact, though one had since returned. That was the day he had met Sarah.

"You had mentioned something to me about learning Sindarin..."

[It was Sindarin, right?]

"Yes. Did you have time?" Then again... he remembers everything he reads. Will he remember all the letters as soon as he sees them?

Spencer nodded.

"I would be very honored to learn how to read Sindarin. You said you wanted help translating the old texts, yes?"

faramir_hurin December 14 2011, 03:31:16 UTC
"There is that, though I don't know how quickly you can learn a language well enough to be able to translate." I could not do it quickly but he is different. "Part of it is simply teaching it. I don't know how to explain why."

To make it real, truly real. We are all equally real. That sounds both simple and foolish.
