It's a walk in the park (mult-pup post, OTA)

It was such a pretty day, and Ramona couldn't think of a better way to spend it than doing absolutely nothing worthwhile. There was a small cluster of cherry trees in the park, the gnarled, arching branches loaded with blossoms nearly the same shade of pink as her hair, so dense that they all but obliterated the sky. Ramona stretched out on the ( Read more... )

Kyla was on her way to the forest with her dogs - Ginger, a red Siberian Husky, and a Ripper, a mostly Bullstaff mix - in order to do some training. She didn't want Ginger or Ripper, or even herself, to get rusty here in a place where there was no war - save for the occasional dragon, it seemed. Because she was on her way to train, she had her side arm strapped to the side of her right thigh and her sniper rifle slung over her back. She had never heard of 'blanks' before, but the employee at the shooting range had suggested them to her if she was planning of shooting out in public, so she had bought some.

She took the park as a shortcut, but when she saw the man who was not only dressed in a way she never knew before, but using weapons she was unfamiliar with. Kyla changed directions, Ginger and Ripper obediently following suit.

"What is that?" Kyla nodded in his direction with her eyes on the wooden sword.

(ooc: I'm assuming he's dressed medievally? If not, I can retag or just ignore the strangely dressed comment)

Alistair paused mid swing, glancing over at the other girl and blinking since her attire and weaponry were just as strange to him as his were to her.

"Ah...well, it's a practice sword," he replied brightly, holding it up in demonstration.

"Practice sword." She tried the words on her tongue and while they were foreign to her, they did not sound completely strange.

Kyla tilted her head as she took another two steps forward. Ginger and Ripper stayed where they were as if having been given a silent command. "And this practice... is for fighting?"

"Ah, yes." Alistair shrugged a bit. "Obviously no one uses swords where you're from. Doesn't really surprise me, I think I'm a bit behind on the times compared to most here."

She felt a little bad causing the man to feel as if he were out of his norm. She knew how that felt.

"Where I'm from we use guns." She glanced down at her side arm and shrugged, "But I'm farther into the future than most people here, so I know what it's like to be used to something others aren't."

Like killer machines.

"That sword doesn't really look like it'd hurt anything though."

"Well, it's just for practice," he explained, a bit sheepishly. "It's made of wood--most swords are sharp, ah, and made of steel. This one might give you a smarting bruise or two, but otherwise, you're right, won't hurt anyone much."

"Like a really big knife then." She was musing out loud and thought about the combat knife she had hidden away in her boot. Kyla was pretty sure she prefer the small version over this larger kind if only because a sword looked like it was heavy and awkward to wield.

"And that's for protection?" She gestured vaguely at the shield. It looked like that was what it was made for. Like a riot shield, but not made of hard plastic.

"Pretty much exactly like a really big knife," he replied with a nod, then glanced at his shield. "Yes it is--though it also works pretty good for bashing skulls if you use it right. Some fighters prefer to use two weapons rather than a sword and shield, but I was trained with the shield."

Kyla knew what it was like to prefer the weapon or style of fighting you had been trained with, especially if that training came with memories you wanted to hold on to.

"Does it work well? I mean, against your enemies." His weren't Terminators. She could tell that right off the bat. A sword wouldn't cut those machines and no one liked getting as close to a Terminator as you'd have to with a sword or knife.

"Well, none of them have guns, if that's what you mean," he replied with a slight smile. "Everyone else is armed similarly, so it works fairly well. Bit more difficult when a mage zaps you with lightning, that'd be the one time wielding metal swords and wearing a metal suit's less fun."

Kyla had no idea what a mage was. "With lighting?" It sounded suspiciously like a laser gun to her. "What do mages look like?"

"Ah, well. People." He shrugged a little. "A mage is just a person that can work magic."

"Oh." Kyla didn't know what she had been expecting, but she hadn't been expecting that mages were regular people.

"Wait. Magic like: 'pick a card, any card'?"

Alistair blinked, because that reference didn't really sink in with him. "Ah..magic like fireballs and lightning bolts."

"Oh." Kyla was distinctly aware of how different Alastair's world was to hers. While most where different, there were some commonalities. Alastair was from somewhere completely different. She had no context for him.

"I'm sorry." She shook her head and smiled sheepishly. "I'm not familiar with a lot of other times or worlds."

"Heh, not a problem," Alistair assured her with a wry smile. "Most people I've met here are from places quite different than mine, though quite a few are at least familiar with mages as fictional imaginings."
