Matchmaker - OTA

After the previous day's disastrous reunion with his mother, Draco was feeling a lot like a dirty rag in the gutter. However, there was nothing like meddling (well, not technically meddling since he had permission from Meg) in other people's lives to provide a way to ignore the shit storm in your own. That was what Draco believed and so he was ( Read more... )

The cafe is terribly crowded when I go to get my lunch. I have the feeling I'll be taking it back to the library. That doesn't generally bother me except that the food gets cold. Ah, well, if it sat for a day and a half it would still be better than late winter rations with the rangers.

Out of the corner of my eye I see a familiar blond head. In the middle of all the chaos is Draco, and it looks like he's working on something. If I can catch his eye I'll give him a wave. He might do better research in the quiet of the library.

Tagging because I saw the thread with John-boy.

Draco lit up when he noticed Faramir noticing him - not in that way, thank Merlin, or there would be some awkwardness to follow - and waved at him.

"Good to see you about, Faramir," he said by way of greeting.

"Good to see you as well, though you'd probably be able to concentrate better at the library. It's not usually this crowded." Well, I don't usually come in at this time either.

"What are you working on today? If it's not secret, that is, or something I completely wouldn't understand."

"Actually I'm working on something you may be able to help me with," Draco said with a grin. "Would you date a twenty-year-old woman, Faramir?"

What? Did he just say...

"Far more readily than I would a twenty-year-old man, certainly. Why do you ask?"

Draco snorted, looking very amused. "A friend has entrusted me to find suitors for her. Not so much for marriage, but more for...intimate companionship here in the village. I'm interviewing potential candidates, and compiling profiles for her to choose from."

I cannot help but smile.

"You are seeking suitors for a young lady?" Draco? "And you think I might be a candidate?"

I can only wonder about the young lady.

"I am thirty-one years old. I do not think many ladies of twenty years would be interested." I am thirty-one at home, but despite my being away so much I do not seem to have aged. Then again, Men of Numenorean heritage do not age as quickly as others.

"I have been making a point to include a wide range of potentials," Draco replied with a raised brow. "I don't think you're age will be a problem; she comes from a time where the man would typically be around your age."

He was pretty sure. Probably should have asked Meg, but eh.

"Thirty-one isn't that old, Faramir," Draco said with a slight scolding tone.

"So she is not a modern lady," I say, and nod. "Many modern women would not like a man so old. I know I'm not really old, of course, but to someone that age I might seem it."

In the modern world.

"But in her time she would be accustomed to someone my age. What time would that be?"

"Late 1800s, Earth time," Draco answered. "She's from Paris, France, and owns the Dance Studio. If you've been to any of the ballets she's organized, she's usually the lead female. Her name is Meg."

"I've not seen any." Nor do I know anyone from that time or by the name of Meg--or what ballet is beyond, obviously, dancing.

"She's from Paris?" I do not mean to sound stupid but I can't help it. Sophie was from Paris as well, but she was modern.

Draco nodded. "Definitely not modern, but she's been adapting quite nicely. Very sweet, and pretty, girl."

Something occurs to me and I may as well ask.

"Is it not rather forward for a lady of that time to seek out a companion in this way? Or is it usual? I know little enough of Earth habits for modern people and less for those of different times." But she isn't seeking a companion--she's having someone do it for her. Would that not usually be a woman's duty?

"What sort of companion is she looking for? Or what sort are you looking for, I suppose is more accurate?"

"No, not so strange," Draco said. "Matchmakers are used quite often actually, even in modern times. I volunteered for the position. To answer your other question, I'm looking for qualities that will mesh well with hers, mostly because of the time she comes from. Definitely looking for someone who won't be too forward with her, well-groomed, intelligent, is confidant - but not too confidant, and doesn't annoy me."

"Hm, you might have had me until that last one, which is up to you and not me." I think Draco and I get along fairly well, but it's difficult to say. He's... a unique individual, and the books do him little justice.

"In Gondor it would likely be a female relative in your position. Then again, few people here have relatives, so we make our own families."

So, how do I truly feel? It would do no harm to meet the young lady, if I am suitable. Certainly I am capable of not being too forward--enough to irritate a modern woman, in fact. Perhaps I would do better with someone from an earlier time, more innocent in the ways of men and women.

Draco grinned. "You don't annoy me, so you're golden. You were actually my first thought when I volunteered for the job; I think you two would get along very well. Even if she doesn't go on a second date with you, you could still be friends."
