After the previous day's disastrous reunion with his mother, Draco was feeling a lot like a dirty rag in the gutter. However, there was nothing like meddling (well, not technically meddling since he had permission from Meg) in other people's lives to provide a way to ignore the shit storm in your own. That was what Draco believed and so he was ( Read more... )

The cafe is terribly crowded when I go to get my lunch. I have the feeling I'll be taking it back to the library. That doesn't generally bother me except that the food gets cold. Ah, well, if it sat for a day and a half it would still be better than late winter rations with the rangers.

Out of the corner of my eye I see a familiar blond head. In the middle of all the chaos is Draco, and it looks like he's working on something. If I can catch his eye I'll give him a wave. He might do better research in the quiet of the library.

Tagging because I saw the thread with John-boy.

"I'm not against making new friends. Here in the village I've had a number of friends who were ladies. Well, they still are even if they've left." I was his first thought? I'm not sure if that's good or not, but I have to imagine it is from what little he's said about the lady--Meg.

"Well, I certainly will agree to meet her. That can do no harm."

"Wonderful!" Draco said with a big smile. "I think I know most of the answers to the questions I've been asking others. Perhaps you can tell me where you would be most comfortable going on a date with Meg?"

I smile slightly.

"Well, we've known each other for a while. Do I want to know what the questions are?" It might help to know what Meg will know about me.

"As to where I'd be most comfortable... Perhaps supper at the restaurant that changes, or anywhere else she prefers. I would go walking if the weather permitted it or sit and talk somewhere quiet in the hotel--quiet but public, of course." She is likely more used to customs familiar to me, like not being alone with a man in private. At least not right away.

"I can ask them if you wish," Draco said. "They're basic information things. What you do in the village, your hobbies, things like that."

He smiled at his response. "That sounds like something she might enjoy."

"You don't need to ask them, as they are things you already know." I shrug. Draco and I met a long time ago and we do know each other.

"It seems as though she and I come from simpler times and are more likely to, if not prefer, we're more accustomed to certain restrictions when courting."

Draco nodded. "My thoughts exactly. Your expectations are similar, which is important. I'm being a bit wary of men from more modern times."

I nod, understanding.

"One thing I would prefer, if you don't mind--please don't mention any titles. I'd rather be chosen on actual merits than an accident of birth." Perhaps I'm oversensitive and she wouldn't care but it's difficult to say.

Draco blinked. "Of course. I hadn't even thought to mention it, really. My lips are sealed."

"I did not know what you'd be saying about me. I just didn't want that. I'm not ashamed of it, but it's not valid in the village anyway and I just prefer not to use it." I'm embarrassed now. "It is fine for her to know that I'm a captain. I earned that."

Twice over, I'm sure.

"All right, I can do that," Draco said, writing it down. "How have you been doing, women aside?"

"I have been fairly well. With it being cold out, more people are reading and I always like to see that." I also like keeping busy.

"I gave and received a number of gifts this year, including giving one to my father who was not angry at all about it. In fact, he asked me to teach swordfighting to students at the school. He believes they should know how to defend themselves if the village... does what the village does." Draco knows. "So I've been making practice weapons for that."

"Really? That's pretty wicked," Draco said with interest. "I'll bet that caused a stir for the parents, though. You're going to be busy over the next few months."

"I suppose some of the parents might be upset, but isn't it better to have the children able to defend themselves? When the village goes mad it affects the children too." I think it is important. "As long as the students understand that they're not playing a game. But I will make certain they know before we start."

I've taught any number of rangers, though in Gondor almost every boy will have at least played at swordfighting.

"I know you personally, so I know Scorpius would be in good hands if he were here," he said. "But I would be afraid that his arrogance would get him into trouble if danger came to the village again."

"Well, you were rather arrogant yet you made it through plenty of troubles so he might be in danger but I think he'd have enough sense to get out before the danger was more than he could handle." That's not cowardice, only good sense.

"Chances are such that Scorpius could already protect himself more than he ever could with a sword."
