The next morning was so surreal.
I got up, dragged myself into the bathroom and confirmed what I already had known. I looked like the death. Of course my flu got worse since my body had finally time to get everything out of its system and unleashed the full ladder of symptoms. Washing myself as good as possible I continued to the kitchen where I found a red-head woman sitting. Today well known as one of my best friends Emily but back then she looked at me with so much disdain that I almost fled back to bed.
“Morning. You must be Andrea. I got clothes for you over there on the couch. A driver is waiting for us to take us to your apartment so we can pack up your belongings. Hurry up we don't have all day.”
“Uhhhh hi. And you are?” Really I hadn't been understanding anything from the waterfall that came from her mouth and especially not in the state I had been in.
“Emily Charlton. First assistant to Miranda. I'm her right hand, taking care of everything and everyone around Runway and Miranda.”
“Nice to meet you.. you can call me Andy. I thought maybe I could eat something first before starting the day …?”
“No time. I have a lunchbox prepared in the car. We need to finish soon enough so we can pick up Miranda from the show and give her an update. She'll be dropped off at the dinner venue then and probably stay there till midnight.”
“Oookay and..and what time is it now?”
“Already noon. She said to come here around ten since you probably needed some sleep. Well I had a great time waiting. Thanks a lot.”
Emily rolled her eyes and walked over to the couch showing me the outfits.
“Now choose and don't waste more time.”
Shocked that I had slept for like 14 hours I stammered:
“I am sorry.. I didn't know someone would come here...had I known I would have set an alarm. And you don't need to come with me, I can do it on my own so you can relax.”
“Nonsense. Miranda ordered me to take care so I will.”
Totally out of comfort zone I just grabbed some pieces and wanted to head back to bathroom but Emily shrieked.
“You aren't going to wear that together right?”
“Why not?”
“It would look hideous. Here. Take these.”
Not caring at all I accepted the offered outfit and vanished.
After getting dressed I got back to Emily and showed myself off “Okay like this?”
“It will do, now come on. We need to start.”
While we were driving the elevator I felt her questioning eyes on me so I tried to smile a bit. Oddly enough I kind of wanted her to like me if she was such a close person to Miranda.
Thinking of her I asked:” When did Miranda start today?”
“Probably around 6am. She usually gets up around that, has breakfast, then checking the book, reading news, getting ready, today she had the first appointment at 9:30 am with Mr. Ravitz.”
“Wow. Tough timetable.”
“Being the best is always tough.” Emily just shrugged and strode out when the doors opened.
Struggling to keep up with the pace, while walking on pumps with a fever I felt the looks from the hotel staff on my back.
Emily must have been seeing it since she reassured me that Miranda had already taken care off my leave-notice and everyone was informed that I was no longer an employee.
It was crazy to have someone care so suddenly. Emily thought the same as I know today. Back then I just slipped in and let the city rush by while driving.
During the whole time we were packing what little I posessed I tried to come to a conclusion what Miranda must have told Emily. Who I was and why I would come with them on their journey back home. Probably nothing since Emily seemed to follow her every command without hesitation and second thoughts.
