My life was wrapped up in boxes that the driver had somehow managed to put into the car and I was sweating like a frappuccino in summer sun. We were on our way over to Miranda as Emily had informed me earlier though I really wished I could have been taking a shower again before meeting her.
“Stop fidgeting”
“Sorry, I'm nervous” Yep.. quiet intelligent wasn't it? What had Miranda said the evening before? No word to anybody. Oh what a smart girl I am.
“Why are you nervous? You don't think she would take you to the dinner, do you? You are sick and belong to bed.”
“Oh right. How insane it would be.”
Emily looked satisfied and settled back in the seats. Soon we arrived at the main show tent and a minute after stopping there, the door was opened by the driver and Miranda slipped in.
Almost forgetting how to breath I smiled at her.
That day she wore a bordeaux red suit with a white top under it. Enough cleavage to let your mouth water but less enough to be tasteful. Her look screamed power and Emily seemed to shrink some inches in her presence.
“This was absolute nonsense. Cancel the preview we would have with that wannabe-designer. We need to go back to the hotel. I changed my mind about the dress. Call Nigel to have the blue ones ready with matching shoes and accessories.”
“Yes Miranda. The samples for tomorrow will be waiting in the car when you will drive to the dinner. You will be picked up at quarter past midnight sharp.”
I wondered when approximately midnight had turned into that precise time and what samples they were talking about. So far Miranda hadn't even glanced at me. Emily was sitting in the front seat and kept hitting the surface of her smart phone.
Probably she had been doing this all along while I was rummaging through my tiny closet. She was really efficient I had to admit.
“Tomorrow I will attend the luncheon before going to the show of Guido Maria Kretschmar and afterwards no more appointments.”
“I updated the schedule. Dinner from the restaurant at the Gendarmenmarkt? I could deliver it to your room.”
“No. We will be fine.”
And that was it. Emily went on organizing and Miranda seemed to relax into the seat now looking over at me.
“Hello Andrèa.”
Two words and my stomach made a flicflac.
“H..hi”
“How are you feeling?”
“Alright I guess. We finished my apartment that lifts a heavy burden off of me.”
“Mhh good.”
She smiled slightly and turned away to look outside what left me staring at her.
Arriving at the hotel we all got out and thee of us walked over to the elevator. Emily always a bit behind us so I could see her shocked face when I stood next to Miranda in the elevator.
Doors closed Miranda turned to me and gave me a once over. Her lips pursed.
“You lied.”
“I...I when? What are you talking about? And why did Emily stay outside?”
“Elevators are my private time. They allow me to sort out my thoughts and talk to my friends or family for a minute. You lied to me about feeling alright. I can see the glow again. You are still feverish and I swear I won't carry you again across the hallway. Emily should have left you at the hotel and done the packing. You belong to bed.”
“Oooookay... I get this thing about the elevator but I didn't mean to lie to you. I just thought that I shouldn't complain since you are....”
I couldn't say more because we had just arrived at our floor and Miranda held up her hand. Till we had closed the door of her suite behind us.
“Nigel?”
“Who is Nigel?”
“Over here.” The male voice called out and Miranda followed it into her bedroom ignoring my question.
Jealousy made itself known in my belly and slowly I walked after Miranda and almost expected her in the arms of this Nigel.
So relieved to see her air-kissing him I stopped in my tracks and asked myself why the hell I felt jealous.
“And this young lady is Andy you had told me about earlier?”
“Indeed. Though she is usually not looking like a guppy lost in thoughts.”
Looking between those two I felt my cheeks heat up and this not by the fever.
“Sorry I was just thinking about something...uhm yes I am Andy. It's nice to meet you.”
“Same for me. I am Nigel, Miranda's Art Director and best friend. That means yes, she had told me who you are and what is going on here and now I will keep talking about those dresses because I hear Emily's heels on the hallway approaching.”
And as fast as this introduction had gone by Nigel was introducing the different looks to Miranda. Emily joined the group of us and took notes. When I asked Emily about it later when we had become friends she explained that the notes helped to have a spare-back of accessories, shoes, make up, sewing kit and and and at stock at the events. Miranda needs to always look impeccable at events. As a leader of the fashion world you can't afford a single mistake.
“I like the last one best.”
Miranda looked over her shoulder at me. “Why?”
“This shade of blue will make your eyes shine out. It will flatter you.”
“It's cerulean.”Her eyes seemed to sparkle and she winked without the others noticing before turning her head back to Nigel. “I will take it.”
That was the moment when I got to know my favorite shade of blue and the moment I realized I had a crush on Miranda.
