Your second book sounds a lot like _Dragon's Blood_ by Jane Yolen. I have a copy of that somewhere and remember liking it a fair bit - must try and get the other two at some point.

Yep. There are other communities for finding out titles. So I'd prefer if you didn't recommend something that you don't know the name of. :P
