So, the army's computer system, the one that's meant to generate job offers for potential recruits, is down. Has been down for three days or so. This is not reassuring

My good friend xxx got computer training in the armed forces and then they shipped him off to Iraq. He served his years but they call him every now and again to remind him that he has specialized skills in a need area and cautioned that he may be called back. There is something in the fine print where they can do that to him. He is receiving good medical benefits - he suffers from PTSD now and is on meds but the medicine and therapist are free.
I wish you the best, but do not listen to any promises of limited serving time or being sent to specific geographical areas. I hope you are not doing this because its a steady job, or health benefits etc. You are joining an organisation which is charged with the defense of this country and that is a noble thing. It also involves if necessary killing others who will want to kill you. He was a network engineer but he also has been shelled with mortars and shot at.
As much as I joke about it ("I lived in New Orleans for eight years, so I'm used to being shot at"), I'm ready for that if that's what they decide they want to do with me. Hopefully I can steer myself to a specialty and an area that doesn't involve gunfire or explosions. And as much as there is a risk, the army's really my best option at the moment. I'll do my time, get a decent skill set and some health benefits, and go from there.
Whatever you choose we would only be worried not upset with you. We wish you the best and having said our piece you have nothing but our support from here on out. Take care of yourself and stay in touch !
Thanks. :) If things work out the way I want them to (see impending entry), I'm going to try to take a swing through new orleans before they take me away to Armyland.
So you went ahead and joined. Well, good luck sweetie and please be as careful as you can be. I hope your "duck and cover" reflex is in good working order. I do admire your resolve and strength of character. They will both serve you well in the challenges ahead. Be safe silly muppet. There will be lots of people worrying about you.
I haven't signed anything yet. It's still more of a preliminary stage thing right now, and there's still a chance they might find a reason not to accept me.
Thanks. :) I'm as worried as anyone, but things should turn out fine. I'll probably be sending out a lot of postcards from wherever I wind up. And hey, free combat boots!
