I just put on The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy. I loved the books, so I fully expect the movie to have bits that I hate. On the other hand, I'm still pissed at Douglas Adams for what he did to Arthur and Fenchurch. So I'm sorta okay, this time, with a movie adaptation that mangles the book ( Read more... )

I still read your thoughts when you share them. :) Don't worry, I get angry at authors, too, for what they do or don't do to their characters. I am even still mad at an author that started a series of books but then died berfore she could finish them.

I saw the movie right after it came out. There certainly was a bit of mangling, but the fact that they turned So long and thanks for all the fish into a song and opened with it...Love, nothing but pure love.

As an aside: I've always thought LonelyPlanet guidebooks should have the words Don't Panic emblazoned on the cover.

There are some good bits. The vogons are fun, and I get a huge kick out of how they gave Deep Thought a female voice.

There should be someone writing a Ford Prefect-style guidebook for earth destinations. Hm...

I've seen both the Hollywood and BBC versions, and I don't really have a preference, except that having Zooey Deschanel in the US version almost makes up for including Mos Def, who is an idiot. However, the American version never did anything as cool as having Marvin the Paranoid Android release an EP of his own songs (one of which I've played at clubs a couple of times - "Reasons to be Miserable").

Yeah, Mos Def isn't working out too well as Ford. He's got some good moments, but no. I hated the person they cast as Zaphod until I noticed he was also Guy in Galaxy Quest, but Bill Murray or Drew Carrey would still have been better. Marvin's just wrong, though.

Zooey was a great pick for Trillian, definitely.
