Wow, what happens when you take two decades off

My obsession with polygamy, the Mormon Church in all its forms, and it's relatives in Christian Patriarchy have led me, ultimately to questions about feminism. And I think that is very relevant with all the furor about women in America resulting from the Palin tag for VP ( Read more... )

In college I was a history major (well, music then history then art) and am 2 history classes from graduation. I took the woman's study track extensively. Every time the discussion turned to women choosing to stay and home and be mothers or work in the home or often even marriage the vemon and vitriol that dropped out of my peers' mouths was enough to literally make me sick to my stomach. I am afraid I'm rarely one to stay quiet and by the time I left college it was with an understanding from my peers and my female professors that a women who didn't devote herself to her own career above all else was a pathetic idiot not worthy of equal rights or consideration or to be thought of having a brain. If I had pursued their ideas of what was "right" for all women I would still be a miserable wreck. That's exactly where I mean that the servant relationship is misunderstood and being taught incorrectly by fundentmentalists. It's not about having a servant. It's about showing love for your spouse, child, whathaveyou through doing things for them as a way to express your love and take care of the family. It works for either sex, any age. I really believe the terminology provokes a kneejerk reaction these days and that something appropiate to re explain the concept simply hasn't found mainstream use. The man in a marriage relationship serves the needs of the woman just as much as the woman serves the needs of the man. It's another way to explain partnership and love but is often coming out expressed incorrectly in domination and bossiness. Honestly, I am becoming aware that many men are dickheads but only thru my sca experience. That type of man is simply not the type of man I've ever had in my family. Perhaps because we have been bestfriends since he was 17 and I was 18 I simply don't have the reference that you're talking ( ... )
