So, this is about the puppy video. No, not a cute one. The one where the marine throws the yelping puppy off the cliff.

Yeah.

Don't look it up, you don't need to see it. Anyway, naturally I started looking up news articles about it, because I needed to know why the FUCK anyone would throw a fucking puppy off a cliff. I was hoping I would find a ( Read more... )

Ugh, Ive been avoiding this story because it's just so awful. How can someone just .. DO that?? Fuck reducing his rank or pay, he needs to go to jail. That's what happens to people to abuse animals, they go to jail.

Or someone from PETA or similar organization hunts them down and sets them on fire.

You know, it's "funny" you wrote about this today. I was getting incredibly upset over animal-related attrocities closer to home. I mean, I was in a shit-mood all day as a result. I found this as a result of searching for a way to get involved with the save our seals campaign down at Children's Beach: I got FURIOUS when I read about more problems in the U-T today. Anyway, this org. which started out as a PeTA satellite is a San Diego based animal rights group. I normally get more worked up about the disgusting conditions humans live in, as a priority, but I really can't turn a blind eye to animal abuse in my own fucking community. I just feel that when humans abuse animals, the treatment should be repeated on them ( ... )

Hmm, keeping in mind that I've read NOTHING about this, and haven't seen the video, but...

right off the bat I can come up with a couple of reasons a Marine would want to silence the puppy, quietly, both militariy valid:
- Puppy was following and would give away position.
- Puppy was actually trained to find smelly Americans and point them out. (Ok, sure it's far-fetched, so is the Marine throwing the puppy off a cliff).

and not:
- Puppy had just bitten the Marine, and he didn't want it to happen again.
- Puppy had just peed on the Marine, and he didn't want it to happen again.

From experience, puppies are not very receptive to commands to "go away" or "stop that". Did he have options? Probably. What he did was certainly one of them.

I'm pretty sure that military vehicles don't stop to check on animals they hit while moving to support the troops, either. Not the same thing, sure. Not that far away, though.

wow, that was longer than it should have been, since I'm speaking from complete ignorance on the facts of this one instance. :)

Now, come on... it's perfectly valid to argue the other side of this without seeing the video, right?

Fine *grumble*... *tries to find video*... hmm, seems YouTube has pulled it.

However, reading the articles, I notice the Marine was stationed in Hawaii, is that where this happened? That would tend to invalidate the "militarily-sound" options above.

The one picture I found shows the Marine smiling at the dog, too, obviously BEFORE throwing it. Creepy.
