Shoes.

Maybe it's the most minor detail ever, but I love that, in Doctor Who, Amy and River wear shoes you can run in. Easily. Without throwing off your balance, or risking you spraining an ankle, or all those things you can do while wearing heels if you don't have really good balance. Or aren't an actor or stuntperson who is used to doing unusual ( Read more... )

Olivia Dunham: Yet more awesome.

I basically roll my eyes at the shoes a lot and mock it, but I just go with it, because it's not going to change. High heels are sexy/professional/gendered women's footwear, and they're here for the foreseeable future.

Was I crazy that River was wearing essentially thigh-high stiletto-heeled boots in this ep, though? Or maybe that was just in a promo shot/my imagination.

Not that she can't run in stilettos. She's River-effing-Song. She can do anything. ^_^

I have no idea! Are you crazy? Because I try not to call people crazy for things like remembering shoes properly. ;)

Anyway, though, you are mis-remembering! River is in a totally awesome non-high heeled pair of cowboy boots. Or what look to be cowboy boots. I checked before I posted. :)

She did wear a pair of kickass red stilettos when she was introduced in the Weeping Angels two-parter whose titles I can't recall on-hand. But she took them off and held them in her hand before she blasted herself out the airlock. Maybe that's what you're remembering?

Well, yes, apologies for the hyperbole. ;)

I think perhaps I'm conflating all of her footwear choices together. Everyone was indeed quite practically attired in this episode, with the possible exception of the Doctor. I mean, who wears tweed in the desert? *hee*

1100 years and he's still a TOTAL DORK.

Basically, I think River's intro is the only time she's wearing those stiletto heels. Which are totally appropriate for the formal dress party that she was at, definitely! I haven't checked The Pandorica Opens/The Big Bang, mind you. But I think I remember it.

It's not a big deal but I do usually notice when my female action heroines actually wear pratical shoes because it doesn't happen all that often. Another reason I love River & Amy (& Martha & Rose & Donna & Olivia Dunham & Zoe Washburne & Kara Thrace & T:SCC's Sarah Connor...)

I notice it all the time, but I think this is the first time I made a list. :)

Your icon is great, by the way!

Lists are fun :)

I snerched it 'cause I think it's important for people to realize that you can actually like ALL of the companions. It's not cheating or anything :)

The shoe thing was one of my primary reasons for hating Seven of Nine on "Voyager." Now, there are a lot of things about VOY that bugged me, but I remember the first time they showed her in her new "uniform" and she had these ridiculous spiked heels and I shut the tv off and never went back, because it was so flat out ludicrous that she would wear anything that impractical, I couldn't take it. (The catsuit was bad enough.)

Personally, I love Jeri Ryan, and I'm good with Seven of Nine, but I wish they had put her in something else. ANYTHING else. You have no idea how much I cheered when they started putting Deanna in a Starfleet uniform on a regular basis on TNG. (Mind you, the only reason you don't know how much I cheered is be ause you didn't know me then. Because it was loud.)

Jeri Ryan is awesome. It's totally not her fault. But oy with the poodles already that outfit. I felt the same way about T'Pol - I wish to high heaven they'd let her wear the damn jumpsuits like everyone else on a regular basis. Particularly since they were friggin jumpsuits that looked vaguely like something astronauts wear now, rather than form-fitting spandex. A Vulcan would not find that attire logical (nor would a former Borg, I suspect) since pockets provide vital storage areas for everyone. Rar. I go on about this a lot.

I think the only non-regulation Starfleet uniform that I was okay with was Kira's, which definitely didn't sex her up. T'Pol's makes NO SENSE, especially given the fact that Vulcan is a desert planet, and I really don't think that a skintight jumpsuit is a good uniform for people on a desert planet. So it's probably not an actual Vulcan uniform she has on.

Basically, I agree with you, and we could probably decorate matching soapboxes.

Given how much running is involved in Doctor Who, I can't say I'm at all surprised - it would be too difficult for the cast otherwise. I want to say that goes back a very long time, but I'm sure most peoples shoes were inappropriate in the 60s and 70s. ;-)

NCIS is another example in the form of Ziva, who most often wears some form of boots - combat boots for her first couple of season, gradually giving way to something a little dressier, but still with little or no heel.

I do wonder how Kate Beckett manages to run in the high heels she usually wears on Castle though.

Does Kate Beckett wear high heels on Castle? While chasing suspects? Oh, blecch.

Yeah, she does ._.

They lampshaded it once - her former partner was looking at her shoes like "for REAL???" - but honestly.

She usually seems to wear some sort of boots with heels. Sometimes they're higher than others, but I seem to recollect that there is always some sort of heel.
