Shoes.

Maybe it's the most minor detail ever, but I love that, in Doctor Who, Amy and River wear shoes you can run in. Easily. Without throwing off your balance, or risking you spraining an ankle, or all those things you can do while wearing heels if you don't have really good balance. Or aren't an actor or stuntperson who is used to doing unusual ( Read more... )

Shoes DO matter. Now I am trying to remember what kind of shoes Scully had to wear in the X-files. Buffy had a thing for boots, but for the life of me I cannot remember if they were practical or not.

Scully wore pumps a lot which was silly given how much running they did too.

Buffy tended to wear heels while the stuntwoman was in flats (SMG is teeny tiny short, so I think they had her in heels a lot of the time, even when it was obviously wildly impractical. I won't even get started on the sleevelessness).

Buffy also did things like kicks in itty bitty miniskirts that meant she should've been flashing her undies at vampires a lot, and only didn't thanks to the miracle of, idek, double-sided tape?

She wore heels, I think, because Gillian's short. Mostly not stilettos, at least. IIRC, anyway! I could be mis-remembering.

I notice things like that too. It always annoyed me when I'd see characters who should know better then to wear heels in whatever they are doing wear them, and not only heels but thin tall heels.

It doesn't make any sense. If you know ahead of time that you will have to do alot of walking, possibly running, and most likely all of that will be on uneven terrain, why would you wear stiletto heels?

I don't begrudge them wearing heels in general (I personally love high heeled shoes despite the fact that I am clumsy and its probably best that I don't wear them) but there are times for those, and times when a good pair of hiking boots or tennis shoes would be better suited.

Personally, I can't even wear heels, given how messed up my ankles are, and I never could've worn spike heels like that, even before my ankles turned basically useless.

They're shoes. TBH, I only really pay attention when it comes to characters on TV wearing impractical shoes for their jobs. Cara's heels, by the way, are fairly cleverly disguised. It took a fair amount of hunting through pictures to figure out that she was, in fact, wearing ridiculous platforms.

omg I know. I <3 them for that (also, the adorable bit where Amy and Rory are dancing at the wedding and he is HOLDING HER SHOES OMG <3)

(I am incoherent, at best)

Coherence is overrated. But Amy ditching heels constantly, including at her wedding, is perfect! I ditched my heels as soon as I could at my wedding, (once I realized that even buying a pair of them had been a mistake).

I am also reminded of the episode of Nikita where she's wearing ridiculous spikes, and the instant she's going to have to fight (she went in expecting not to have to, but of course, something went wrong) she stops and snaps the heels off her shoes. I was just like SHOW. I LOVE YOU SO HARD NOW.

In my experience how impractical a female character's footwear is for running seems to correspond inversely to her height. Karen Gillan is almost as tall as Matt Smith, so they don't put her in heels because it would make her taller than him. Freema Agyeman, on the other hand, is so petite compared to David Tennant that she might've disappeared from frame if they'd let her wear trainers ( ... )

In my experience how impractical a female character's footwear is for running seems to correspond inversely to her height. If that were the only reason, though, they'd be putting the shorter men in stiletto fuck me pumps so they can be as tall as their leading ladies. (Just the fact that a nickname for them is "fuck me pumps" tells how gendered and sexualized that high heels can be ( ... )

Wasn't really trying to defend the idea, only to say that even when there's a (debatably) logical reason for it, it's still annoying. :-)
