This, uh...

this--th-this isn't the happiest topic. I, just, y'know, I--I-I don't want to ruin anyone's mood so--so...

So--so yeah, heads up.

...Death isn't permanent here? There--th-there's a system that brings us back if something happens to us. But...I-I mean, we have something like death. When--w-when a person leaves, when they're just--j-just ( Read more... )

[Sokka has been told to go eat by Jim, but he'd heard the audio, anyway. Might as well try Sergei's, then.

He's not gonna light a candle. Nope. Not him.

....yes, he is, he totally is. He does it with the nature of a man on a top-secret mission, shifty glances back and forth, all around. He lights three candles, and walks away.

He walks back, pulls a little tiny birthday candle in half, sticks it back down on the table, and lights that one, too. That one's for his arm, but he'll NEVER ADMIT IT.]

[Sokka runs back over a third time and lights the other half of the birthday candle and retreats to a booth.]

[...Herz saw that, Sokka.

But don't worry, he won't comment on it. He wouldn't know quite what to say, anyways. It's a pretty personal matter, after all.

Instead, he just approaches the booth.]

Hey. Can--c-can I get you anything?

Uh. I don't really know-- What's good?

[There's a pause.]

I know what foods I like, but I don't really know what the actual names are. Other than steak.

[There's also Crispy Thingies, but nobody seems to know what those are. That turtle told him the actual name but he forgot.]

[Not that Rain was really listening to the network (he never really could get a good handle on it, but he tried sometimes), but he made his way to Sergei's almost entirely because it was the only place he'd seen so far that was kind of welcoming. Though he was a little surprised by the candles.

...Ah. It wasn't hard to figure out. He was actually touched to see even on a ship like this, people still had the heart to remember others.

He wandered over to the candles and got two for himself, lit them quietly and lowered his head. Not that he thought a prayer would do any good here, but. He still believed in them. Why not.]

[Herz watches from a respectable distance. When the man seems to be finished, he steps closer, speaking softly.]

H--hello.

I'm--I'm one of the cooks that works here. Would you like anything to--to eat?

[Sloooow blink. Oh man this poor kid, Rain's already a bleeding heart for you just from the scars.

But MOOD CHANGE he likes the idea of food, Rain loves food.]

I would love that! What kind do you have?

[Herz blushes a little, instinctively ducking his head at the man's initial glance. He's gotten that enough to know what it means.

But, he raises his chin again when the man speaks.]

Well, just--j-just about everything, sir. You're, uhm, y-you're--you're welcome to come with me into the kitchen an--a-and look for something you like?

[Andrew doesn't usually do memorial stuff like this. Of course, he's never had a reason to. So he feels like he needs an excuse to come down to Sergei's besides lighting a candle ( ... )

[Herz watches quietly from the sidelines, then after Andrew's third candle, he slips into the kitchen.

Andrew...reminds him of himself in some ways. So he doesn't feel too presumptuous when he returns with a napkin filled with cookies for him. Sweets always make shit like this better?]

[Buffy, Dawn, Xander, Willow, Kennedy, Faith, Mr. Giles, the principal, Vi, Rona... Andrew hasn't even started lighting candles for the people who actually died--Amanda, Molly, etc.--when Herz arrives with the cookies. Candle in a nervous hand, Andrew smiles sheepishly at Herz before lighting one last wick and setting down the piece of wax. He's not necessarily embarrassed at his somewhat bleeding heart, but more that he was wasting so many candles on himself.]

S--sorry. I didn't mean to take up so many.

Nah, it--i-its okay.

There's more candles where those came from.

[He smiles softly at the other man and sets the cookies down next to him. From the looks of it, he's gone and interrupted Andrew, so there may be more candle lighting to come. If that's the case, he doesn't want to fill his hands.]

Here. I, uh. I-I--I thought you might--might want some.

[Mindy spent a lot of time telling herself not to accept Herz's boat-wide offer, but ultimately trudged down to the restaurant. She hovers now by the table of mismatched candles, the array oddly charming to the little girl. Not that her expression shows anything but apathy.

Fuck lighting candles for those she left back home--Kick-Ass, Marcus... That's just stupid. At least they're still alive, so far as she knows. She doesn't need to light a candle to reassure her of their happiness. But Daddy... her big, strong, loving daddy deserves at least something.

Finally, she glares at the table. The irony of lighting a candle for her father who burned to death is too gruesome. Fuck Herz and his stupid candles. Muttering under her breath, Mindy turns away from the table and starts back out of the restaurant.]

Mindy?

[He was watching her from the kitchen, called to her on a whim. He wouldn't stop her if she really wanted to go.

Just...honestly he was surprised to see her here.

He wondered if she was going to light something for her dad.]

[She stops, cursing herself for letting Herz see her, and turns to face him, keeping her eyes averted.]

Hi, Herz.

[She sort of wishes she didn't like Herz enough to respond.]

Can, uh...

Can--c-can I...get you something?

[Sal doesn't go directly for the table of candles. He's still trying to work out in his head who all to light the candles for. Instead, he works his way to Herz, immediately throwing an arm around his friend's shoulders.]

Hey, dude. This was a good idea, y'know? Does make y'kinda miss good ol' Kansas, though, huh?

[Despite the sullen atmosphere, Sal is trying to keep his spirits alive as much as possible, along with those of the people around him. Sure, he misses those back home, but he isn't going to lose sleep over them over nine months later. But it is nice to think about them every once and awhile.]

[Herz is glad Sal showed, even more so for his chipper mood.]

I-I dunno. About, y'know, Kansas. I-I--I mean.

I'm glad you--you like the candles, though.

[Sal squeezes his friend's shoulders with the arm around them before dropping it and stepping up to the table, eying it carefully. Finally, he lifts a lit candle and lights another for Elisa. Three more for his mother and sisters. Might as well get in one for his step-dad, the asshole. And, after a short hesitation, one more. He sets down the candle and steps back.]

S'a good idea. Man... s'a lotta lit candles... [He wonders if Mikaela lit any. As many people as she's lost here.]

[He just nods solemnly at first, then gives Sal a friendly pat on the back.]

I--I tell you recently I'm glad you're here?
