Some ramblings on Reality TV

I'm a relatively recent viewer of reality TV. I held out for a long time before succumbing to my voyeuristic tendencies and tuning in to see what all the fuss was about. Nothing much as it turns out, but I still watch it every now and then. How is it that such junk can take up half our air time and we'll all avidly talk about the contestants' ( Read more... )

fun, current events, wtf?

isn't it funny how people tune in after something interesting has happened, hoping something else interesting will happen ( ... )

Every now and then I feel the need to own up to my more embarassing indulgences. I agree with everyghing you have said about reality TV, and yet I am still compelled to watch it every now and then. Even more fun if watched with a crowd so you can all shout and throw things at the TV together!

heh heh... it can be tricky owning up. years ago i was working as a consultant in melbourne and during a day workshop i was facilitating, the bold and the beautiful came up over lunch. some of the participants were quite shocked to think i would do something so trashy :)

you want a crowd to validate your guilty pleasure! i liked to watch it alone...

I find stress-balls are good for throwing at the television too, not just for reality tv, they're really good when the politicians are on.

I'm into the garden, clothing and home makeover shows. I actually have done a garden makeover. I got a consultant to help tell me what to plant after I told her what I wanted and what I liked. Then we did all the implementation work. It was really good because she suggested plants that I didn't know about and they served my purposes beautifully. I'm still satisfied with the outcome ( ... )

I think any kind of makeover is fun! That's the appeal of those shows isn't it, to dream of what you could do yourself!

I think they do a lot to help you self actualise if you so choose. I also love Wife Swap and Supernanny. I'm hoping a friend of mine watches Supernanny! It's interesting to see how inept people are at parenting; it's all about setting boundaries and people obviously haven't gotten beyond the hitting paradigm and don't know how to cope without it if they think it's a bad thing.. or possibly discover it doesn't work. Still the temptation is to laugh at these people who are really laying it on the line but it doesn't say much for our culture to leave people in a mess without a clear way forward. I hope Supernanny helps address that.

I'm afraid Supernanny annoys the hell out of me. I see what you're saying, but I find it too painful to watch. 'Nanny' is a misnomer, she doesn't nanny, she teaches parenting skills. And she can't pronounce acceptable. I watched five minutes and had to change channels! (This from the girl who admitted to the crimes above - go figure!)
