Mary Sues
I personally feel that the word Mary Sue is being thrown around way to often. It's one thing to call a self insertion character in fanfiction a Mary sue, but to call just about EVERY lead female character in a story a Mary sue, now that's just going to far.
This about this.
A female character that is either smart, attractive, powerful, or has some special characteristic, maybe linage, the last of a special race, or a special ability is automatically labled a Mary sue.
A male character that is either smart, attractie, power, or has some special characteristic is labled a hero... hmmm there's something wrong with that.
A character that is considered sweet and nice is also not a Mary sue. A Mary Sue is a perfect character that can do no wrong. Often the sweet and nice girls have a tendency to be a bit naive.
Oddly enough, many of the female characters that fangirls/fanboys approve of display the most suish traits. I won't name any for fear of pissing someone off. And no, none of the characters I am thinking of are canon sues, they are just the ones that resemble Mary Sues the most.
