You are most certainly not the only one~ I've noticed this attitude for the longest time (Ever since I first started getting into anime/manga, actually, and that was years ago), and I just don't understand it all. The only thing I can figure out is that it's horribly irrational~
...I wish these people would at least give a decent explanation as to why they dislike these characters~ "Because they're too cheerful" and "too cute" aren't really reasons.
I'm pretty suprised that Shippou and Toboe are bashed~ I thought they were the more liked characters... Waaait a second, people are bashing my Toboe!? *Bares fangs* Jeeze. How many bashed characters are there in Wolf's Rain~
Hrm~ Terribly sorry if I'm not making much sense. Having a slightly off-night~ *Shakes head*
Re: Bashing in Wolf's Rain. Hmmm...dotsOctober 7 2004, 09:50:31 UTC
Yeah. Toboe is one of those Sue-him-or-hate-him characters. Either you're a rabid fangirl who writes Sues for him like no tomorrow, or you think he's cute, useless, and annoying.
Me, I found Toboe's childish behavior to be cute and a good balance to the overhwlming angstiness of Kiba and jadedness of Tsume.
Gonna try not to spoil Wolf's Rain with this...meshouOctober 6 2004, 23:34:39 UTC
I must confess, I was lukewarm on Toboe until the end. Then, I outright disliked him.
Spoiler, highlight to read:
OK, even with the motivation for what he did firmly in place... no. Jumping between a goodguy with a shotgun and a badguy with a shotgun does not count as defending the goodguy That's what the shotgun was for.
If they had changed it to the goodguy being defenseless, that would follow actual earth logic. But if you get in a crossfire, you are not effectively helping the goodguy, you're killing yourself. And you know what? That's common sense, and something Toboe should have known. Not as in "the character is stupid" but "The writers made him do something no sane and normal person would do, ever, and putting it in front of me as some wonderful sacrifice instead of a pointless WTF moment? Lame."
I know that his death having little meaning fits the theme of the series. But making him do totally unnatural things just to fit the theme made me feel more disgusted and patronized than sad he was gone.So... it's not so

*waves her "I love Shizuka" flag vigorously.* I had to defend Shizuka on a message board from a girl who was brainwashed by the dub for Yuugiou. ;_; She is not a spineless inferior! She is not, I tell you! ;_;
ChibiUsa! "The pink spore wants to have sex with her daddy/is into bestiality/is SOOO MEEN to Usagi/has pink hair/is CUTE/is a little girl/EXISTS!". Granted, her anime self could be a little bit of a brat in SuperS, but Usagi was just as bad. :P
I've also seen Nils written as an annoying brat in some Fire Emblem fics. --;
Anime!Chibi-Usa IS very annoying, IMHO. But then again, so are many kids in RL. And the horrors done to her in fandom are SO terrible that I can't help but being sorry for her.
Kumi from Captain Tsubasa, the "Twerps" from Pokémon, Ascot from Rayearth, the Li cousins from CCS, Popp from Ojamajo Doremi, Shiro from Mazinger Z, Genki from Getter Robo, Jun from Ronin Warriors, Makoto and CIA from Saint Seiya, Hikaru from KOR, and lots of other anime children/pre-teens/kids- younger-in-comparation-to-others also get kicked by fans. Meh.
Several people hate him because, in the anime, the monsters he summoned killed Presea. And they can't see beyond thhat... when in fact he joined Zagato because he wanted people to respect the monsters he summoned, was a very lonely person until Caldina and later Umi befriended him, and in the manga he actually learns other spells to stop summoning and not put his friends in danger anymore.

Cody had it too, but Cody actually did stuff and was vitally important to the plot (especially during the stuff with Oikawa...now that was freaky)

Not even in the DUB she's spineless, fangirls! Remember that she saved Jounouchi from drowning and defeated an enemy in the Noa arc?
So, she's NOT a weakling! Haha!
