I think Nixon understood on an intellectual level that the press hated him and would do anything to make him look bad, but I don't think he ever really believed it in his heart, and couldn't stop trying to make them like him. Maybe the only journalist who ever reciprocated was, ironically, Hunter S. Thompson, who had a fairly civil conversation with him on Air Force One about football.
