I think Nixon understood on an intellectual level that the press hated him and would do anything to make him look bad, but I don't think he ever really believed it in his heart, and couldn't stop trying to make them like him. Maybe the only journalist who ever reciprocated was, ironically, Hunter S. Thompson, who had a fairly civil conversation with him on Air Force One about football.

And now I can't remember what book it's in, even if I knew where we have those books. Arg.

Anyhow, I offer America the spectacle of reporters being polite for the first time since The Amendment They Thought Of Right After The First started being violated.
