Avalon is a legendary island in the British Isles. Known for it beautiful apples. But more famously it is believed that King Arthur was buried there (or lays to rest until he awakens in the future). In is also believed Merlin stayed there for some time. Or more recently in the novel/movie Mists of Avalon, where Morgaine (Morgan Le Faye) tells her story while she stayed there.

Aphrodite/Venus is the Greek Goddess of beauty and love. Myrtles, doves, sparrows, and swans are sacred to her. In one version of her birth, Aphrodite is actually of an older generation than Zeus. In another version, she was considered the daughter of Dione (with some believing Zeus her father). Even thought she is married to Hephaistos (which was of Hera’s idea), Aphrodite is frequently unfaithful. She mostly prefers to go after Ares.

Apollo/Phoebus is the Greek God of prophecy, medicine, death dealing, archery, poetry and music. Apollo was the twin brother of Artemis and son of Zeus and Leto. He is associated with the sun, with light, healing, and medicine. Apollo was in love with a nymph named Daphne, who was turned into a laurel tree by Zeus (sometimes it is believed Peneus saved her instead) who answered her prayer.

Ares/Mars is the Greek God of savage war and bloodlust. Vultures and dogs are sacred to him. Ares was the father of Deimos, Phobos, and Harmonia by Aphrodite, the father of Oenomaus by Sterope (daughter of Atlas and Pleione), the father of Cycnus by Pyrene, and the father of Diomedes by the nymph Cyrene. Son of Hera and Zeus.

Artemis/Diana is the Greek Goddess of the hunting, chastity and of the Moon. Deer and cypress are sacred to her. She often gets mixed up with Selene, the Titan goddess of the moon. She was known widely as the virgin goddess. She is also the protector of the young girls and of animals. Artemis is the twin sister of Apollo. Her parents are Leto and Zeus. She also helped her mother deliver her brother Apollo for nine painful days; this earned her the reputation as a healer.

Daphne was a free spirited dryad. Was the daughter of Peneus (a river god). Apollo’s infatuation with her was caused by an arrow from Eros, who was jealous because Apollo had made fun of his archery skills. Eros also claimed to be irritated by Apollo’s singing. Daphne prayed to the river god Peneus (sometimes it is believed Zeus saved her instead) to help her and he changed her into a Lauraceae tree, which became sacred to Apollo.

Eros is often known as Cupid (His Roman name). He is the god who makes people falls in love and the god of erotic romantic love aka lust. Eros is the son of Aphrodite.

Hades/Pluto is the god of the Underworld, and brother to Zeus, Posiedon, Hestia, Demeter, and Hera and son of Cronus and Rhea. One of the most famous stories of Hades is his with Persephone (daughter of Demeter and Zeus). In it, Hades abducts Persephone and ends up tricking her into eating pomegranate seeds thus sealing her fate to live there forever. Missing her daughter badly, Demeter made famine come to the world while Persephone was in the Underworld, thus creating the seasons Autumn and Winter. Spring and Summer is when Demeter is with her daughter.

Hephaistos/Vulcan is the god of blacksmiths, craftsmen, artisans, sculptors, metals and metallurgy, and fire. His mother is Hera and his father is Zeus, and is the brother to Ares. He is married to Aphrodite. He was quite ugly; he was crippled and misshapen at birth. Hera, mortified to have brought forth such grotesque offspring, promptly threw him from Mount Olympus. He fell for many days and nights and landed in the Ocean where he was brought up by the Oceanids Thetis (mother of Achilles) and Eurynome.

Hera/Juno is the sister and wife of Zeus. Hera was a child to Rhea and Cronus, her sisters are Hestia and Demeter and her brothers are Zeus, Hades, and Poseidon, and her half sister is Aphrodite. She was the mother of Hephaistos, Hebe, Eris and Ares by Zeus. She is well-known for her hatred and attempts to kill her husband’s child, Hercules.

Medusa was originally a beautiful human. She was raped by Poseidon in Athena’s temple. Poseidon was an arch-rival of Athena’s since at one time he vied for patronage of Athens. Upon discovery of the desecration of her temple, Athena changed Medusa’s form to match that of her sister Gorgons as punishment. Medusa’s hair turned into snakes and her glance would turn all living creatures to stone and she was banished beyond the Hyperborean lands. While Medusa was pregnant by Poseidon, she was beheaded by the hero Perseus with help from Athena and Hermes. From her neck came her offspring: Pegasus and Chrysaor.

Melpomene is the Greek Muse of tragedy. She is a daughter of Zeus and Mnemosyne. She has eight sisters; Calliope, Clio, Erato, Euterpe, Polyhymnia, Terpsichore, Thalia, and Urania.

Metis is a Titan goddess, and the Greek goddess of prudence, wisdom, and deep thought. She is represented wisdom, and her reputation for being wise was recognized and respected by mortals and immortals alike in literature, myth, and poetry. Metis is the daughter of the Titans Oceanus and Tethys. Metis is the mother of Athena by Zeus. After Zeus ‘had his way with her,’ he learned that if they had a child together it would be more powerful then him. So he tricked Metis and ended up swallowing her and figured she was no longer a threat. However, Metis was still pregnant with Athena and when Athena was born, this turned into quite a problem. Soon Zeus was plagued with killer headaches and he ran to Hephaistos and begged him to open his head. Hephaistos did as he was told, and out popped Athena. After Zeus had eaten Metis it was believed he became more intelligent.

Persephone is the Queen of the Underworld and wife of Hades. She is the daughter of Demeter and Zeus. She became queen of the Underworld when Hades abducted Persephone and ends up tricking her into eating pomegranate seeds thus sealing her fate to live there forever. Missing her daughter badly, Demeter made famine come to the world while Persephone was in the Underworld, thus creating the seasons Autumn and Winter. Spring and Summer is when Persephone is with her mother.

Splash is a famous 1980s' film starring Tom Hanks and Daryl Hannah. It was about a mermaid (Hannah) who comes to New York to find Allan (Hanks) and he names her Madison. They fall in love, and if you want to learn more... rent the movie!
