Select Guide to SSHG Drabbles (HBP Era)

Mar 03, 2008 22:39

Within this post is listed SSHG drabbles I found memorable posted after July 15, 2005 and before July 21, 2007, as well as ones nominated in the HBP round of the sshg_awardsI earlier posted complete guides of all stories in that period of various lengths. I wasn’t able to do a complete guide for the short stories, there are over a thousand on FFN alone. It ( Read more... )

I'll second what you said about drabbling. As I discovered this past Fall with my few drabbles that I did by myself, it was a way to get a quick thought or snippet out and get some lovely reviews.

Then, when we did our Round Robin for the Order this Christmas, it ended up coming to over 20,000 words between the six of us for those 3-4 weeks. Now that was interesting. I don't know that it was necessarily the best thing out there, but it was fun to see what cliffhangers each person would try to throw out and how they would be resolved.

And, as I've told you before, I think that drabbling makes you really think - is this word necessary? Could I show this more efficiently? Is this adjective/adverb really necessary, or just flowery language?

Thanks for this post! You spend so much time making things easier for the rest of us to bookmark and read!

And kribu has written what's amounted to short stories I enjoyed--about 4 drabbles at a time--so yes, it can add up.

I did skip the round robin--they're fun to write, but, no offense, I've never read one that wasn't a train wreck. The problem is that there's always either a weak link or someone goes off the rails. I remember one I read in SSHG early on. It started off well, and with authors that were compatible in its view of Snape. Two of the authors participating were favorites of mine, but ones with views of Snape that simply were not compatable. So in the beginning you get this heroic-tinged "fanon" Snape and angsty tone--then the new author comes in with her "so-called canon" Snape and *screeeech*

But amazing though--that it could reach novella length that way.

Oh, no offense taken. I understand completely about the "weak link". I don't think we had anyone go off the rails or get too far out there in their characterization, but I would definitely classify myself as the weakest link - I mean, look at my co-authors - Shug, Buzzy, Kribu, Kel, GinnyW and me. And we definitely had our strengths and weaknesses. Let's face facts. I got the sex scene to write for our last post. Oh, yes. That is sooooo my strong point. Writing smut. *insert eye rolling here ( ... )

Hell, Mistee, I liked "The Beauty of Grace" more than many a story by more than one author on that above list--so don't put yourself down! Although I would have felt plenty of trepidation if I'd had got the smut part.

What helped us all get to the same place was sitting down and outlining the characters, the backstory, the mood, the mandatory happy ending for Christmas, etc. Kept us on track.

I know that even when it's just two (remember I did that Christmas fic with Zeegrindlylows) it's a lot of work to smooth together two styles and visions--so I can only imagine six!

I did those ficlets where I asked for requests--about 800 words each--in the space of one day, and did NaNoWriMo once--so I know both the challenge of writing about 500 to 1000 words a day and how so seemingly little can add up...

Now, if I could just apply it... Keket says she just wants 300 words of BOS--just 300... *bites nails*

Those lists of yours are going to come in so handy once I get around to thinking of the sshg_awards nominations! I'll still need to make sure I don't forget any WIPs started before DH which I'd want to nominate, but for completed stories... you've really done an awesome job here.

And as with the short stories, there is a lot here I haven't read (the majority of things you've listed this time, as I hadn't really taken an interest in drabbles pre-DH - not that I was against them, just that I still had so many long stories to get through, and I hadn't even found GS100 then).

Not for a guide, but for nominating purposes, I did poke around. The problem is that although archives will have a way to search for completed, they don't have a way to search for non-complete. Except FFN. I just looked there and together with my search on AFF earlier and what I hear is out there this is my list ( ... )

I should say--not a complete list--lots more on FFN--that's just a list of stories I'd at least heard some buzz about, or where I know the author is good.

Drabbles tend to be disposable, in the sense that other on GS100, they often not archived or even read, except in some very rare cases. It was interesting trawling thru GS100 and picking through to find the keepers (or at least the ones I thought were keepers)

And I know--you're DH era. LOL. I was on GS100 during HBP--posted about 5 drabbles series and a bunch of drabbles, so I was aware of some of the above, but there was a lot I missed.

I think that's my favorite among the single drabbles--although I really love snapeophile's a lot too.

Trying to winnow my list down some I discussed these with keket_amunet and she liked that one and some others so much she went and rec'd them on Know It Alls, but otherwise single drabbles rarely get any recognition--the drabble series fare somewhat better--bambu345's have been rec'd on crack_broom and remusseverus's won a Quill to Parchemnt award.
