But I wave a flaming sword at anybody who impugns the ethics of people who have put in hundreds of hours of work (yes, I said hundreds... coding, counting, verifying, entering... *shudders), and who set up a system that is all about integrity. Cheating and conspiracies? *growls

However, I do laugh at the speculation there's some seekrit conspiracy to keep people out since that would require a wide scale organized effort, and getting fandom organized to do something productive is like herding cats. Can you imagine how difficult it would be to organize them to do something they thought was destructive or hurtful? ;)

It's not a conspiracy, but often in any awards there is a pattern to who gets nominated/wins that frankly has to do with who supports the awards. Here's the irony. I'm positive in my heart of hearts that many a person yelling conspiracy did not nominate. Did not encourage their friends to nominate. Did not pimp the awards in general. So if faction A is more represented than faction B, well there's a reason (Besides quality, although frankly the louder the whine, the more I suspect quality as a factor in an author not placing. Good authors don't tend to have a sense of entitlement--they tend to be self-critical, and I tend to think that's exactly what separates them from the bad.)
