And he's immortal! (through many dedicated fans' hearts! And of course, let's not forget Sherlock's biggest "fanboy" Detective Conan! (Shinichi Kudoh)

The first SH novel "A Study in Scarlet" was published on 1888. And according to Doyle, Holmes' birthday is on 1854. He was 33 in the first novel.

Not in the freakishly-vampiric-Edward-sparkles-and-his-semen-doesn't-die sort of way! I mean, he is immortalize through the fans! And even a century later, he is still famous! There's going to a be a new SH movie this 2009 starring Robert Downey Jr. (from Iron Man) and Watson is played by..get this...Jude Law!! (WTF, Watson is bishounen!) And Rachel McAdams (The Notebook, Mean Girls) will be Irene Adler.

This is very interesting! I had at some time read someone comparing Sherlock Holmes and L, and I was hoping someone would write more about it in depth. Holmes' characteristics definitely set up a large part of the detective archetype.

To be honest, I haven't read any with Holmes yet, but I've really been meaning to... this gives me incentive to put it higher on my "to-read" list. :P

I'm glad to have helped a fellow DN and L fan! I really have noticed many characteristics similar between these two sleuths and I felt the need to define those.

You should read Holmes' mysteries especially the original collection of Doyle. There are 4 novels and 56 short stories all in all. The other stories published by other authors are okay too (some I don't favor). But I recommend you start with Doyle since he owns SH.

Interesting.... Watari = Watson.

Thanks. Sometimes I make the most unnecessary connections XD

But I do see Watari as Watson (or Alfred) when he's around L.

I most certainly will be referring back to it for my own RP!L. It's amazing how much you can pick up from other people, and L's character allows for so much exploration.

And you gave me that final push to pick up reading the Sherlock Holmes series. I haven't read any of it since I was in grade school and have been meaning to after all of this detective love -- and you know, being older and more perceptive. So thanks for that too!

The Sherlock Holmes series has a basic formula. There are four novels and 56 short stories originally by Conan Doyle. But many authors write SH stories of their own as well. Published FanFiction as I call it. I've read one and it was quite true to Doyle's style. If you know the anime/manga Detective Conan, I'm sure Shinichi Kudoh will agree with you to pick up a book of this wonderful detective! And anything to help an L rper. I'm a fan of the what_the_l where all L roleplayers gather and share stuff.
