She wanders out of the 'fresher without the water and takes heavy, stumbling steps towards her mother, already choking on tears. Tenel Ka's grip on her is strong and they cling to one another as the virus takes hold outside. Gadell strokes her hair as they wait to find out what is happening.
It goes on forever and half the bloodline is gone now. Tenel Ka's scared, Allana can see it in her mother's eyes right before the Queen blinks it back and shows only strength. Her hand shakes as she strokes Allana's face and she looks up at Gadell over the four year old's head. They're plotting and Allana gets a sinking feeling in her stomach.
Hapes isn't safe, not now, with this war over and the murder of so many...Tenel Ka doesn't want to risk taking her daughter back just to have her poisoned at dinner or smothered in her sleep. The Queen of the Hapes Consortium has lost much today and she refuses to add her daughter to that list.
