I haven't watched it, but from what I've been hearing it's not something I want to watch immediately.

It's funny the way you describe it as being well-written and well-acted, but crap in terms of Torchwood. I do agree though, dark and gritty only works if the show itself has the outline for dark and grittiness. Torchwood is not one of those shows, and while this miniseries might have gone in that direction I understand people's dislike for that darkness when the show was not as accustomed to that sort of thing.

The first three episodes were some of the best of TV I'd ever seen. About halfway through the fourth episode, the point seemed to become making everyone want to kill themselves. The last episode had more Torchwood cameos than Torchwood characters.

Also they built this up to be a wonderful story about character development with an exciting plot and lots of wonderful slash moments. It turned out to be more moralizing-driven than anything else, the moral being that humanity is shit and that there is no hope for anything, because if you even try challenging that fact, you'll suffer for it, tenfold.

And also, they seemed to have done a bit of a reverse on the whole sexuality thing, which makes me feel a bit queasy.

I agree with all of this. And in the end, we have to question whether it is good storytelling. There's a difference between a story that wrenches at your heart, and one that is cruel and destroys itself in order to tell a story that wasn't its to tell. In terms of "Torchwood" it was inherently bad storytelling.

As a self-contained story- one which is a standalone minseries or a movie- it was good. As something that was suppose to revitalize a series that had already had 26+ episodes of thematic development and character arcs and relationship arcs and the like, it fails miserably. And with the series in question being queer poly gritty campy Torchwood, it fails even more ( ... )

I have to say I live in fear that there will be a season 4.
