i love muscovys! they're quite friendly actually, at least the ones i've met. i wonder if we'll run into this guy when we go back to lake james next month, he was our fishing buddy last year.
Yeah--I've been reading about their behavior and am discovering that they're very "puppy-like"--will even wag their tails when they come up to you. Spooky Duck is now much less spooky to me.
Fishing buddy, eh? How DO they do with swimming--I read on one site that they're not as water oriented as most ducks since their oil glands aren't as developed.
AWW!! I wish I had one of those guys around here. They may look a little evil, but they are super sweet normally. I had one near my old house and he'd beat feet to get to my door because we'd feed him bread and had a bowl of water out for him to drink/spill on himself. You should do that. He will eventually get to know you so well he'll let you hand feed him and possibly even touch him. :)
Wood Ducks are awesome. You know their also called Carolina Ducks? I think those, Pintails and Mallards are the most common ducks here. They're adorably mottled.
My favorites are Hooded Merganser. They have the best "hairstyles" ever.
It fits here though. Rob and I both wondered what he was--Chicken, duck, goose.... Looking it up was interesting. I found myself using terms like "white bird" "lumpy red head" and "duck" "white" "red lumps" The word "domesticated" is what finally got it.

I may try it though--get all attached to him and steal the neighbors' Spooky Duck.

The male wood duck: the duck that looks like it was designed by someone on mescaline.

A "What the hell is that" bird.
Usually I know the large bird species. This one defeated me.
