"Hi there! Can I help you find something today?"Hank spun around at the unexpected male voice behind her, half-hoping by some weird twist of fate and the time/space continuum that it was Joe standing behind her. Instead, it was a drop dead gorgeous sales clerk with long blonde hair and warm brown eyes. Before Joe, she might have actually gotten ( Read more... )

Amelia was loitering by the front counter, pack of picks in hand, flipping through various song and instructional books, trying to find one she thought might help Hank. Her brightly colored, layered clothing made her stand out like a sore thumb, though not necessarily in a bad way.

At Hank's approach, she glanced up and smiled brightly, holding up the book she was flipping through. "How good are you at reading music?"

When she found Amelia up front, Hank's perpetual scowl softened a little as she peered over her shoulder at the book she was perusing. Shrugging, she squinted and tried to make sense of the symbols on the staff.

"I don't, really." she admitted. "I mean, I just started this shit. Toca gave me a few tips, and I checked out a book at the school library before winter break started. I do pretty good in bio and chemistry, though? So music's numbers, shouldn't be too hard."

She paused, reaching out to point at the page. "That's a whole note, and that's a sixteenth note...I think that's a rest? And I know that's a treble clef." Scowling again, she tapped the numbers at the head of the staff. "And that's the time signature...Toca said it reads like a fraction."

"Oy, lookit you," Amelia grinned brightly, reaching back to muss Hank's hair just a little. "Much better than me already. I never learned quite as good as I should, just memorized the chords and played by ear. They say you should learn to read music--you have books already y'said? Thought we might pick one up."

Hank rolled her eyes at the gesture, but was secretly pleased by the approval. Her dad did shit like that when no one was looking, and instantly it made her miss him.

Pushing it aside, she shrugged and toyed with the plastic-wrapped guitar strap in her hands as she answered. "Just the one...it's, like, MUSIC THEORY FOR THE BRAIN DAMAGED or some shit, real dumbed down. Figured I could use all the help I could get."

Hesitating, she slid a glance to Amelia and shrugged again. "What the hell...let's try a book. Maybe we can both learn to read this shit together or something."
