I had my original suspicious, but I saw the container they used to house them, and saw them set free. I'm not sure where those souls went though, as their bodies are still empty.

A glitch. But they have the power to invoke a version of this glitch at will. Permanent droning, then, may be out of their capacity to control, but temporary droning, while it appears to operate on essentially similar principles, has a different origin--not this process of 'conversion.'
