Reading roundup and other fannishness

(crossposter still broken, ugh)

2. Everina Maxwell, Winter's Orbit -- part of a very fun sync read, although, exactly as I predicted, ikel89 mainlined the book in 24 hours (just as she'd done with the fic, only mostly during daytime) and did not stop to post about it, at least one sync read member got distracted by other fannishness along the way, but ( Read more... )

Galaxy Quest was on TV last week and I watched it again for the first time in years. :-)

It's been a while since I watched the whole movie, but every time I catch it on TV, I watch the rest of it. And I've watched the pig-lizard scene more times than I can count XD

I do take the syncreads seriously! If I commit, I will read! But seriously, I don't think I would have read Cyteen otherwise or at least not easily, and I do enjoy reading what other people think.

I just got "Desolation called Peace" from the library and it has a weird poetic start. I liked the first book enough to pick up the sequel so we'll see.

I adore Galaxy Quest, especially as a Star Trek fan. I own my own copy but I haven't seen it in a while. Now you are giving me ideas.

I don't think I would've made it through Cyteen -- or possibly even tackled Cyteen at all -- without a sync read either.

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts on Desolation Called Peace.

I think we might also own Galaxy Quest, actually, though I'm not sure I've ever actually watched that copy, LOL -- usually I run across it on TV when we travel and am like, ooh, right, I love this movie, and watch a bunch of it until it's time to do something else.

Apparently a Galaxy Quest 2 is in progress. I'm not sure if that's a good thing or bad... Either way, thanks for the mention, I'm going to check out Never Surrender.

Oooh I didn't know a sequel was in the works -- that's... well, could be very cool, or could be very meh (especially given the sad lack of Alan Rickman), but let's hope for the former!

And hope you enjoy Never Surrender!

I only made it 15 minutes through it. Not because it was bad! But I noticed I could also watch Coming 2 America on Prime and so I switched to that. Tomorrow I'll finish Never Surrender.

I never ever watch Prime videos, I really should pay more attention to what's there.

Did you like Coming 2 America? B, who likes the first one a lot, watched it, and was so disappointed, he just went and watched the original again to, like, restore his faith in the franchise.

I never think of Prime as a video option, either, and they do have some useful things! Though never what I want to be watching at the moment :P

Oooh, Never Surrender is on Prime! I'm definitely going to watch that. Thanks for the hint!

but a lot of things about the city in general felt off enough to throw me out of the story, minor as they were -- BART in Downtown SF mentioned in a street fight (the trains go underground there, all you see is the stations)

The weird alignment when an author fails to do enough research but you have the luck to know the details by firsthand experience, LOL.

I had seen Dim Sum Asylum around somewhere (Goodreads?) and it looked interesting mostly from a worldbuilding POV, cause Chinatown fae procedural could've been interesting a la Dresdenverse? But it sounds like it didn't even make that bar, or even having the fae be more than human with wings.

harder to find time to read without my commute, which used to be basically ~10-15 hrs of mostly-reading time a weekThat's something I noticed too! A lot of people were like 'omg I'm reading more' but I think I had it in reverse cause there's no longer the allocated block of can't do much else so might as well read? Which is weird given we're stuck at home, but I guess there's just so many ( ... )

Yeah, like, objectively it's not a big deal, but I find it breaks the suspension of disbelief quite a lot when authors get these little details wrong. And, honestly, in the age of the internet, it's not that hard, I think, to have an actual San Franciscan beta your book and point out stuff like that. Or just make up your own city! I never did understand what the point was of setting the book in SF...

Yeah, Dresden-verse or something like Rivers of London was what I was hoping for in the ideal case (plus m/m, obviously), but it was sadly not anything like that.
