Ship that has broken my heart is Fitz/Fool from Elderling Saga.
Fuck you, Robin Hobb! Why do you hate poor Fool this much?! Honestly, s/he deserves so much better...

Speaking of love triangles, I've seen such things IRL and they almost always end up badly, if that's a true love triangle we are talking about.

I didn't get to the Fitz & the Fool trilogy itself -- I sort of lost steam with the Elderlings around the middle of Liveship Traders -- but I'm sorry to hear that the Fool doesn't get a happy ending of some sort. S/he was one of the more interesting characters in the books I did read, for sure!

I'm not sure I've seen a full blown love triangle IRL, but it absolutely seems like something that would sour all relationships involved most likely. And therefore isn't something I wish on characters I like, either. And if they're not characters I like, then it's just a boring distraction.

Indeed. Okay, I know that the ending is logical in itself but still it's not fair. Killing Fool would be more honest. Now one of my friends says that Hobb made one more trilogy about them. But I can't read it. I mean, I'm one of those people who never cry over the book but these books were way too much even for me. I prefer to think that Fool went over seas to his/hers homeland and found happiness with person other than Fitz.

Yes, my understanding is there's a Fitz and the Fool trilogy (starting with Fool's Assassin, I think?) set after the Tawny Man trilogy (neither of which I've read, but I have several flisters who've kept up with the series). The third book (Assassin's Fate) just came out this year, but I don't know where it leaves things...

I totally agree with you about Nimona. It was a sweet story and I enjoyed it, but I got to the end and I wasn't crying or filled with emotions like a lot of people were.

*nods* I liked it, but I wasn't blown away. But then, I find graphic novels less impactful in general, so it wasn't totally unexpected.

It WAS super cute, though!

I'm totally gonna tell myself that the reason why you're so meh about nimona is because you and picture storytelling are just noncovalent* :P

or maybe it's bob the expectations builder that i inadvertently helped undermine it!

(but i'm glad you found things to enjoy - like chaotic evilness and the super awesome cohesion of pictures and story (the dynamism was great!) and xmas special yes.)

i only read luke's pov so far, from the short story book, so skipping reviews until then :)

It's probably true about me and picture-based storytelling, yep. (Even when I like something in that medium, very often I'm less affected by it than I probably would be if it were in a different medium, either book or animated show. Also, I think the more cartoony style of Nimona -- which, I like gingerhaze's style! -- probably works against it in terms of emotional investment for me

Most everything I read these days is in first person pov, to the point that it seems odd to read in third person pov.

I find I enjoy it. I didn't used to, when I was younger, but nowadays, I prefer it.

I think I mostly read first person POV, too, and I do prefer it -- especially snarky, smart-ass first person. I've always liked it, I think, but it's become a lot more common, especially with certain genres. Probably have The Hunger Games to thank for that in YA (and Twilight?) and probably The Dresden Files in urban fantasy.

The first person plural, second person, and other weird ones are more hit-or-miss for me, but I don't mind them in principle, as long as it doesn't drag on too long, and there's a reason for it, rather than just randomly showing off.

Nimona *was* really cute! And I think you might appreciate the worldbuilding that just sort of plops you in the middle without explaining the world. It's a very quick read, anyway.
