Additional fannishness

In squeeful fannish news: Vallista has a publication date! September according to Brust, Amazon has mid-October, but either way, it's a real book really coming out this year, woo! (And the Paarfi book, "The Baron of Magister Valley" is still under submission. Which is less squeeful, but at least I now know the full title. Is that... a Count of ( Read more... )

Apparently Suicide Squad was written in six weeks, two totally different cuts were made (one by the director, one by the company that cut the first teaser trailer) and shown to test audiences, and then they ended up doing a bunch of reshoots and I think sort of combining the two cuts... So, it probably wasn't you not paying attention that made it confusing? That movie was doomed, basically. DC really doesn't seem to know what they're doing at ALL in the movie department!

Ah! that could probably explain the weirdly jarring pacing issues and confusion. It kind of did feel like two different movies (at least) randomly dashed together.

DC really doesn't seem to know what they're doing at ALL in the movie department!

They really don't, and it's kind of odd! Like, are they trying to differentiate themselves creatively from the MCU's approach? Because Marvel clearly has a formula which works very well, and it seems like it wouldn't be that hard to duplicate. Is DC trying to be... not charming or funny on purpose? I mean, I know they've built their franchise on Batman, and Batman is not funny or charming, but now that they're starting to branch out maybe?

It was just kind of painful to watch...

It's starting to seem that way! I think part of it was that they had success with the Dark Knight movies, so they thought "Ah, we're different from Marvel, we're ~dark and edgy and adult~" and that was their angle, and then that wasn't working out and they started panicking and executive-meddling everything. They are clearly trying to go more Marvel-esque now, but I think Marvel started out with a cohesive vision for what a Marvel movie should be and DC is sort of floundering around and throwing things at the wall to see what sticks. At least they've remembered they have characters other than Batman! It would just be nice if they did something good with them...

Not like I know jack about DC, or even really that much about Marvel, but I'm sort of in love with this description. Don't mind me, I'll be grinning silly over there, in the corner. XD

It has been a few years since I read any the Dragaera series. I know I do not have the confidence to get the voices right. Funny fact: If I had had a boy (I didn't) I was going to name him Morralan Daymar. Before I lost one of the twins My girls were going to be: Aliera Liadrin and Athyra Lyorn. (Yes, I am a fangirl of the series.)

Not a Suicide Squad fan. Loathed Harley and the Joker. Actually, I wanted to cry, because I liked the Cartoon version of them. Chris Pine's agent needs knee capping. I love the man's acting, but I will not be watching WW, the trailer looks like *censors self*

Oh wow, a Dragaera fan on LJ who is not yet on my flists. HI! :DDD

Are you following the more recent Vlad books? Hawk was so good, a return to form and movement forward FINALLY after years that felt kind of like treading water on that front, and I am really looking forward to Vallista as well.

Aliera Liadrin and Athyra Lyorn

Oh, those are pretty! And that is pretty hardcore fangirl of you. (And I'm sorry for your loss :( )

I've found Chris Pine charming and magnetic in everything I've seen him in, including Into the Woods, where I really hadn't been expecting to like his role, and this WW trailer was the first time he did absolutely nothing for me. Like, it actually took us a while to figure out that what's-his-name was being played by Chris Pine, because the actor *looked* like Chris Pine but had zero charm or presence, and that didn't seem to compute.

While I basically don't ever get inspired toward fic or art about it, I'm always happy to talk about Dragaera.

Hopefully come September there will be new canon for us to talk about! :D (Or, hmm, maybe I should do a targeted reread before that... I always turn up new things when I reread the Vlad books, and I don't think I've reread Iorich at all, and Tiassa I haven't reread in full for sure. And maybe I should actually reread Jhegaala; I'm hoping I'll get more out of it the second time around...)

Vallista is meant to takee place just before Hawk, right? I seem to remember Brust saying that early on, but don't remember if that remained true as he actually wrote the book or changed...

Not sure when Vallista is set; I don't generally pay much attention to things until the book actually shows up. I'm both excited and trepidatious about this one, though, as an architecture nerd.

From past experience, sometime in June we'll start referring to every Tor package as "not Vallista," and then I'll start something chunky that I really want to read the day before it shows up. (Max Gladstone's new thing, maybe.)

I can understand that! (Although it's always hard to predict how much the House will be present with their literal attributes vs something of a more metaphorical connection...)

Ha! The Vlad books are such fast reads that Vallista will pre-empt anything else I'm reading at the time (but I don't mind reading more than one book in parallel / in nested fashion).

(Which Max Gladstone's new thing? Is there something more recent than Four Roads Cross? I'm still on Last First Snow, but part of my plan this year is to catch up.)

I watched Suicide Squad on NYE and thought it was okay. I liked it better than Deadpool. Generally I like Marvel more than DC - the exception being "Legends of Tomorrow" which I love.

I haven't seen Legends of Tomorrow, but O watches/has watched some DC TV shows and likes those -- it seems like maybe that length is a better medium for them? (He enjoyed Suicide Squad more than me, but he also thought Deadshot was the main good thing about it.) He is totally obsessed with Flash at the moment. (I just asked O about Legends of Tomorrow, and he says he's seen it, but likes Flash, Arrow, and Supergirl more. I had no idea he was even watching some of these things XD ( ... )

I watch both Arrow and Flash but I have to admit it's more out of habit by now as I've been slightly bored lately. We'll see what it's like when the new seasons come to Germany ... I think Gotham is DC as well, no? I watch that but I'm a bit meh about it as well.

Yeah, Gotham is DC as well. I asked O, and he doesn't watch it, though, because he doesn't see the point of a Gotham without Batman :P

Ohhh, good fandom wishes!!

I heard SS was a disappointment. I have no idea why DC keeps screwing up their movies. Rather blows, really...

I think it was you who'd originally linked to the trailer that I first saw, and it looked like it would be so much fun from that! Sadly, I would've rather watched the trailer a few more times than the movie it ended up being :P
